Excerpt from The History of First Presbyterian Church of New Bern, North Carolina, 1886-1987 Most of the history in this portion was gleaned from the available church records: the minutes of the session, beginning in 1891; the minutes of the diaconate, beginning in 1952; the history of Women of the Church; individual members; and the memory of the author covering thirty-four years with this church. It is difficult to get a good historical view of the local church from the minutes of the two boards, since they usually record only action taken. If the clerks of said boards had briefly recorded the subject matter of committee reports, instead of committee report received as information, which is the customary terminology used, the minutes would be of more historical value. For twenty-five years I have planned to bring the history up to date from 1886. To do so has been a rewarding experience. I am indebted to Margaret, my wife, for her encouragement. The church has been very cooperative in permitting me the use of the materials I might find in the church's archives. The Historical Foundation in Montreat, North Carolina made available to me the minutes of the General Assembly, and Orange and Albemarle Presbyteries.
