This book addresses contemporary discourses on a wide variety of topics related to the ideological and epistemological changes of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and the ways in which they have shaped the Spanish language and cultural manifestations in both Spain and Hispanic America. The majority of the chapters are concerned with ‘otherness’ in its various dimensions; the alien Other – foreign, immigrant, ethnically different, disempowered, female or minor – as well as the Other of different sexual orientation and/or ideology. Following Octavio Paz, otherness is expressed as the attempt to find the lost object of desire, the frustrating endeavour of the androgynous Plato wishing to embrace the other half of Zeus, who in his wrath, tore off from him. Otherness compels human beings to search for the complement from which they were severed. Thus a male joins a female, his other half, the only half that not only fills him but which allows him to return to the unity and reconciliation which is restored in its own perfection, formerly altered by divine will. As a result of this transformation, one can annul the distance that keeps us away from that which, not being our own, turns into a source of anguish. The clashing diversity of all things requires the human predisposition to accept that which is different. Such a predisposition is an expression of epistemological, ethical and political aperture. The disposition to co-exist with the different is imagined in the de-anthropocentricization of the bonds with all living realms. And otherness is, in some way, the reflection of sameness (mismidad). The other is closely related to the self, because the vision of the other implies a reflection about the self; it implies, consciously or not, a relationship with the self. These topics are addressed in this book from an interdisciplinary perspective, encompassing arts, humanities and social sciences.

Sociolinguists have been pursuing connections between language and identity for several decades. But how are language and identity related in bilingualism and multilingualism? Mobilizing the most current methodology, this collection presents new research on language identity and bilingualism in three regions where Spanish coexists with other languages. The cases are Spanish-English contact in the United States, Spanish-indigenous language contact in Latin America, and Spanish-regional language contact in Spain. This is the first comparativist book to examine language and identity construction among bi- or multilingual speakers while keeping one of the languages constant. The sociolinguistic standing of Spanish varies among the three regions depending whether or not it is a language of prestige. Comparisons therefore afford a strong constructivist perspective on how linguistic ideologies affect bi/multilingual identity formation.

Nosotros tenemos que entender que servimos a un Dios fiel, no importa qu tiempo transcurra, para que cumpla su promesa en nuestras vidas, ser como l lo dijo. Al principio no vemos seales, vas, maneras pero al final veremos el cumplimiento de su promesa. Espero que este libro sea de bendicin para cada lector, que retenga lo bueno de esta prueba, dice su palabra que retengamos lo bueno de cada cosa.

Papa Francisco “Ser esencial fue fundamental para difundir y colaborar en aquellas acciones o encuentros basados en los valores éticos y el recupero de consignas de vida a partir de la creencia. La iglesia que no miramos, fue lo que Ser Esencial, nos planteó visibilizar”. Padre Pepe di Paola Cura Párroco – San Juan Bosco Walter Peña comenzó trabajando como actor a los 16 años en cine “La noche de los lápices”, “Sofía”, entre otras. Ha realizado también trabajos en televisión. En la década de los años 90 conformó el grupo de teatro musical “Los Eternautas”. Participó como actor, escritor y director en diversos espectáculos de teatro y música. Alternativamente a partir del año 2001 fue realizando trabajos de gestión cultural a nivel nacional e internacional. Diseñó y coordinó “Creyendo” programa interreligioso y cultural, el cual se presentó en medio oriente en la visita del Papa Francisco a Jordania, Palestina e Israel. Diseñó la puesta del espectáculo musical “Creyendo en Luján” con la participación de 20 artistas populares que se presentaron por primera vez dentro de la Basílica. Diseñó y coordinó la presentación de la obra “Padre Carlos, el rey pescador”, en la sede Unesco de París-Francia. Ideó y dirigió el documental “Un compromiso con el pueblo” (basado en el Padre Carlos Múgica y los trabajadores). En el año 2020, cuando la pandemia del COVID-19 se propaga en Argentina desarrolla la idea y el guion de la serie televisiva (13 capítulos) “Ser Esencial” con el Padre Pepe di Paola. Actualmente está en producción la segunda temporada del ciclo con la Pastoral Villera de la cual también dirige áreas de comunicación junto al Padre Pepe.
