From time to time, our mind starts to wonder... Who are we? Where did we come from? Where are we going? Why are we here? Is life about something more than being born, studying, having a job, buying a house, raising a family and dying? What is the meaning of it all? Sometimes we are suffering and it feels like the circumstances around us give us no choice but to remain miserable. Other times even though we are happy there is an emptiness inside, as though something is missing, and we try to fill it with external factors. But external factors are neither the origin of our suffering or happiness, it all comes from inside of us. That means that the ability to overcome misery and experience true happiness is also inside of us. The power to transform our lives and be happy instead of sad, peaceful instead of restless, fulfilled instead of drifting away... Living, rather than surviving. This is what the Yoga path teaches. It is about understanding life, ourselves and the Universe, realising how everything and everyone is connected, awakening our consciousness, finding meaning, becoming free from our conditionings, unleashing our true potential and letting our inner light shine forth. This book's main influence is the Yoga path, but it also includes references from Gnosis, Buddhism and other esoteric traditions, which complement the Yoga teachings. Each chapter describes a different "secret," which is really a core aspect of the initial stages of awakening. These secrets are often hidden in plain sight, and we may know them at a superficial level - but don't be fooled by their apparent simplicity: these are very complex and profound subjects, with lots of nuances, which will have a powerful impact in our reality once we have fully understood and integrated them into our lives. Yoga is founded on awareness, living fully in the present and connecting with our true nature and that of the universe. It leads us through the process of uncovering the deepest truths about human beings, life and the Universe, allows us to merge with the superior aspects of the Universe and realise that they are not separate from us, removes the veil of illusion that causes our suffering and allows us to see the truth as it is. The Yoga teachings and techniques will work to expand our consciousness, awaken our capabilities and enhance our perceptions of reality. By understanding all that exists outside and simultaneously inside of us, we will have the freedom to choose what we relate to and how to live our lives. These teachings are for everyone, not just for people that are going through specific phases, or have previous experience in the area, or have a particular culture or background. Yoga is based on universal values and does not go against any traditions or beliefs one may have. Many people know of Yoga by its most popular element, which is Asana (means posture in Sanskrit). However, Asana is only one element of Yoga. Yoga philosophy is a huge part of this all-encompassing system, which involves all aspects of our life, in this path that takes us to consciousness. Yoga is designed to act on all levels: from the physical level, to the energetic, emotional, mental and spiritual. It has the potential to completely transform our thoughts, feelings and actions so that we can live a life of happiness, freedom and peace. There is a particular way to read this book: each secret is meant to be contemplated in a period of no less than a day and no more than a week before moving on to the next. Reason being that this book is designed to unleash very deep and complex resonances within the attentive reader, which take their time to unravel, so you will need some time to match the teachings against the different aspects of your life. Plus during the night, as the lower mind rests, the full potential of these insights reaches a deeper part of our subconscious, and gets integrated into our way of being. This is how the inner transformation begins.

With its promise of personal improvement, physical well-being and spiritual enrichment, yoga is enjoying a resurgence in popularity at the turn of the third millennium. To unravel the mystery of the discipline, its philosophies and relevance in contemporary life, the original text of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali must be explored. This book offers the first accessible translation and commentary on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. An introductory section examines the multidimensional aspects of yoga as philosophy, psychology, science, and religion, as well as exploring popular versions of yoga in the West. The core of the book offers a new translation of the entire text of the Yoga Sutras, in a language that is clear and comprehensible to students. Commentaries are presented to highlight the meaning of various statements (sutras) and key themes are outlined via sectional summaries. A full glossary of key words and names is also provided. Concluding chapters look at yoga in contemporary life, revealing the popularity of yoga in the 21st century through Star Wars, and exploring yoga's connection to health and science, contrasting yoga's holistic view of healing with that of the limited view of present day medical science. Sample physical, breathing and meditation exercises are provided. An Introduction to Yoga Philosophy offers a comprehensive introduction to the Yoga Sutras text of Patanjali to all students and interested readers of Indian philosophy and religion, world religions, east-west psychology, and mysticism.

There are three sacred texts (i.e. giving the word of God) on Yoga: the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika by Svatmarama. These set out completely different paths: loving God, self knowledge and health. The Yoga Sutras in particular is shown in this book to be very strange. There are three sacred texts underpinning the philosophy of Hinduism (known as Vedanta): the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahma Sutras. There is one text underlying Christianity: the Bible. One version of the bible differs from another. It has been subject to complex theological and political influences over the millennia. Even in the New Testament, Jesus says some nice things but some silly things. Christianity gives a fourth path, following Jesus. There is one sacred text underlying Islam: the Koran. Islam is a fifth way, ’to submit to and serve God’. The Gita, the Koran and the Yoga Sutras all state that you need to surrender to God in order to make progress on your life path. Hatha yoga is preparatory to this. They all say that you need to serve humanity. Unlike with the Bible and the Yoga texts, though, the Gita and Koran do not ask you to believe in magic. The author, with 57 years’ of yoga practice, 40 years’ of yoga teaching experience, and a deep study of these texts, has written this book from a practitioner’s perspective. He surrendered his body, mind and soul to God in 2002 and since has been practicing Bhakti yoga, with a view to serving God by helping all nice people he meets to be happy. In this book he shows that the different texts highlight different paths that you may wish to follow: you need to choose. Whatever path you choose, you will find that Kundalini (Iyengar) yoga will help you to serve God better, by improving and maintaining your health. The author hopes that this book will help you to find your life path, to progress in it (using Kundalini or Iyengar) yoga to help you and to solve any physical, sexual, emotional, love, mental, spiritual or divine energy sphere issues you may have, and to become happier.

A wise, accessible guide that makes the spiritual and ethical teachings of the yogic tradition immediately relatable to our practice on the mat—and in our everyday relationships and activities “There is no daily practice without some formal training; and there is no deep spiritual training without the mess of relational life. The two are one,” says Michael Stone. At the root of yoga practice there is a vast and intriguing philosophy that teaches the ethics of nonviolence, patience, honesty, and respect. Innovative teacher Michael Stone draws from numerous disciplines—including Buddhism and psychotherapy—to provide an in-depth, completely clear explanation of yogic philosophy, along with teachings on how to bring our understanding of yoga theory to deeper levels through our practice on the mat—and through our relationships with others. Yoga, says Stone, is a practice that helps us be more present with the actual, fluid life we are living right now—and there is no yoga without the conditions of your life. This book describes how to work with those conditions and how to fully appreciate yoga as a practice of being intimate with moment-to-moment reality.
