The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has been enchanting audiences since it was first published in 1900. While many fans may know the work only by its movie counterpart, the world L. Frank Baum built within the books is much more elaborate. Since the more recent publication of Gregory Maguire's Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and the Broadway play of the same name, fans have had a rekindled interest in Baum's original works from which the retellings draw heavily. Anyone interested in fantasy, magic, and silliness is sure to love this American classic.L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) is one of the most recognized and beloved children's authors, though he is often recognized for only one of his many stories. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is easily his most popular work, though Baum actually wrote 13 sequels in Oz. His writings consist of practically every genre: Baum wrote 55 novels in total, 82 short stories, more than 200 poems, as well as scripts, and other miscellaneous writings. Interestingly, many of his non-Oz works were published under pseudonyms. Baum made many attempts to bring his work to stage and screen, but the most successful productions were not made until after his death.

]True courage is in facing danger when you are afraid...] ― L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, also known as The Wizard of Oz, is a modern fairy tale with a distinctly American setting. The story is about the fantasy fiction adventures of a girl named Dorothy -together with her pet dog Toto, as they are swept away from their home in Kansas by a cyclone. Find out why the Library of Congress has declared The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as "America's greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale"! Dorothy is a young girl who lives in a one-room house in Kansas under her Aunt and Uncle's care with the joy of her life, her dog- Toto. A cyclone came and took Dorothy and Toto while they were inside their farmhouse to a place called Munchkin Country. The munchkins become indebted to Dorothy and Toto as they somehow kill the Munchkins' evil ruler, the Wicked Witch of the East, when their cyclone carried house landed on the witch. Although the place they got swept in is full of wonders, Dorothy wants nothing more than to go back home to her family. Somebody told her that the only way they can return home is to follow a yellow brick road to the Emerald City and ask the great and powerful Wizard of Oz to help them. As they go on their way to the Emerald City, they faced many trials. They met a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodman, and a Cowardly Lion who all together seeks what they think they lack. Will the needy Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion they met along the way help them see the great Wizard of Oz? Should they succeed in meeting with the Wizard of Oz, will he help them? Will Dorothy and Toto be able to come back home? Read the book to find out how a little girl and a dog survive in a bizarre world, and all their adventures encompass.
