Awakened by great shouted oaths below. Peeped over the side of the manger and saw a Belgian lass milking and addressing a cow with a comprehensive luridness that left no doubt in my mind that British soldiers had been billeted here before.' - Private Norman Ellison, 1/6th King’s Liverpool Regiment Humor helped the British soldier survive the terrible experiences they faced in the trenches of the Western Front during the Great War. Human beings are complicated, and there is no set pattern as to how they react to the outrageous stresses of war. But humor, often dark and representative of the horrors around them could and often did help. They may have been up to their knees in mud and blood, soaking wet and shot at from all sides, but many were still determined to see the ‘funny side’, rather than surrender to utter misery. Peter Hart and Gary Bain have delved deep into the archives to find examples of the soldier’s wit. The results are at times hilarious but rooted in tragedy. You have to laugh or cry.

All the poems between My Momma Did Say I Would Meet A Girl Like You and Untitled are observations, reminiscences, and insights stories within a story. Using the river motif and oral tradition in Untitled the poet underscores certain thematic and analogous paradigms within a socio-cultural, geo-political landscape. This landscape is America. Why America? Well, Long Creek runs from the back of our house into the Roaring River. Moreover, all the diverse rivers of the world run into the great rivers of America. Similarly, peoples from across the globe stream into America the land of opportunity. America then, has become an inter-cultural, intracultural dynamic; framework a cauldron that brews an alchemy of ideas that is characteristic of a renewed people called Americans. Many of the poems, their titles and the images within them, find a connection, a culmination even, in the last poem of this collection, the revelation Untitled.

Its not for lack of tools thats deterring him to write. Hes got enough of it. More than enough, for sure. His laptop may be three years old but its still better than a typewriter, though he sometimes wish he still had one of those family heirloom, that clunky yet sturdy, made-in-Americathe land of the free but indebtedwriting machine. He loves the steady clicks of it as he types as if validating his every word, every dictum, every idea he churns out. Then it speaks in silence when hes done, yet is eagerly awaiting for the next set of ideas, which he would create in partnership with those keys. A typewriter does not spot a typo, does not suggest synonyms, would not do cut and paste, could not even tolerate more than a couple of errors, yes, but it does not need to be plugged in to that power outlet on the wall either! A laptop, on the other hand, does not mind how many errors you make. It may even be that it actually prefers that you make those errors just to show off that it has become more intelligent than you presently are or ever will be. In the not-so-distant future, hes afraid that this typewriter-killer would do all the thinking for him. Hes got it all mixed up whether its a good thing? But how could that be a darn good thing, thinking nothing when it is his all, his everything, all that hes ever been good at?

If I Don T Laugh I Ll Cry written by Molly Stillman and has been published by Thomas Nelson this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-26 with Religion categories.

In this laugh-out-loud and heartfelt memoir, writer, speaker, and podcaster Molly Stillman shares her unforgettable story of losing her mother, squandering an unexpected quarter-of-a-million-dollar inheritance in less than two years, attempting to launch a career in comedy but ending up on a farm instead, and finding faith, hope, and joy in the middle of it all. Molly Stillman has lived the type of life that when shared, people stop in their tracks and ask, "Wait, what happened?" Molly's mother, Lynda Van Devanter Buckley served as an Army nurse during the Vietnam War and wrote the bestselling memoir, Home Before Morning. When Molly was seventeen, Lynda passed away after an eight-year battle with an autoimmune disorder due to her exposure to Agent Orange. Four years later, Molly turned twenty-one and unexpectedly inherited a quarter of a million dollars from her mother's estranged family's estate. Through "retail therapy" and a long series of grossly irresponsible financial decisions, Molly found herself broke with over $36,000 in credit card debt less than two years later. Shame, guilt, and embarrassment set in. With aspirations of a career in comedy, Molly used humor to mask the pain and brokenness she felt, believing that if she looked joyful and put together on the outside, it would eventually be true on the inside. Instead, she spent the next few years depressed, lonely, and feeling alienated from those closest to her. But an unlikely call with a compassionate credit counselor, meeting the spreadsheet-loving man who eventually became her husband, and a surprising visit to a church started her on a path that changed everything. If I Don't Laugh, I'll Cry will bring readers into the tension of feeling both joy and grief and show them that every broken, messed up story has a purpose, and it's possible to gain everything if they're willing to surrender it all to Jesus.

Do They Hear You When You Cry written by Fauziya Kassindja and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-01-26 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Like the bestsellers Princess and Not Without My Daughter, Do They Hear You When You Cry? tells the dramatic, compulsively readable story of a woman fighting to free herself from the injustices of her culture. Fauziya Kassindja's harrowing story begins in Togo, Africa, where she enjoyed a sheltered childhood, shielded by her progressive father from the tribal practice of polygamy and genital mutilation. But when her father died in 1993, Fauziya's life changed dramatically. At the age of seventeen, she was forced to marry a man she barely knew who already had three wives, and prepare for the tribal ritual practice of genital mutilation - a practice that is performed without painkillers or antibiotics. But hours before the ritual was to take place, Fauziya's sister helped her escape to Germany, and from there she travelled to the United States seeking asylum - and freedom. Instead she was stripped, shackled and imprisoned for sixteen months by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Enter Layli Miller Bashir, a twenty-three-year-old law student who took on Fauziya's case. When the two women met, Layli found a broken, emaciated girl with whom she forged an extraordinary friendship. Putting her heart into Fauziya's case, Layli enlisted help from the American University International Human Rights Clinic. The clinic's acting director Karen Musalo, an expert in refugee law, assembled a team to fight on Fauziya's behalf. Ultimately, in a landmark decision that has given hope to many seeking asylum on the grounds of gender-based persecution, Fauziya was granted asylum on 13 June 1996. Here, for the first time, is Fauziya's dramatic personal story, told in her own words, vividly detailing her life as a young woman in Togo and her nightmarish day-to-day existence in American prisons. It is a story of faith and freedom, courage and inspiration - one that you will not easily forget.

A tragicomic story of bad dates, bad news, bad performances, and one girl's determination to find the funny in high school from the author of Denton Little's Deathdate. Winnie Friedman has been waiting for the world to catch on to what she already knows: she's hilarious. It might be a long wait, though. After bombing a stand-up set at her own bat mitzvah, Winnie has kept her jokes to herself. Well, to herself and her dad, a former comedian and her inspiration. Then, on the second day of tenth grade, the funniest guy in school actually laughs at a comment she makes in the lunch line and asks her to join the improv troupe. Maybe he's even . . . flirting? Just when Winnie's ready to say yes to comedy again, her father reveals that he's been diagnosed with ALS. That is . . . not funny. Her dad's still making jokes, though, which feels like a good thing. And Winnie's prepared to be his straight man if that's what he wants. But is it what he needs? Caught up in a spiral of epically bad dates, bad news, and bad performances, Winnie's struggling to see the humor in it all. But finding a way to laugh is exactly what will see her through. **A Junior Library Guild Selection**
