This collection is the first to focus exclusively on twenty-first-century young adult Gothic fiction. The essays demonstrate how the contemporary resurgence of the Gothic signals anxieties about (and hopes for) young people in the twenty-first century. Changing conceptions of young adults as liminal figures, operating between the modes of child and adult, can be mobilised when combined with Gothic spaces and concepts in texts for young people. In young adult Gothic literature, the crossing of boundaries typical of the Gothic is often motivated by a heterosexual romance plot, in which the human or monstrous female protagonist desires a boy who is not her ‘type’. Additionally, as the Gothic works to define what it means to be human – particularly in relation to gender, race, and identity – the volume also examines how contemporary shifts and flashpoints in identity politics are being negotiated under the metaphoric cloak of monstrosity.

Rooted in the oral traditions of cultures worldwide, fairy tales have long played an integral part in children’s upbringing. Filled with gothic and fantastical elements like monsters, dragons, evil step-parents and fairy godmothers, fairy tales remain important tools for teaching children about themselves, and the dangers and joys of the world around them. In this collection of new essays, literary scholars examine gothic elements in more recent entries into the fairy tale genre—for instance, David Almond’s Skellig, Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book and Coraline and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events—exploring such themes as surviving incest, and the capture and consumption of children. Although children’s literature has seen an increase in reality-based stories that allow children no room for escape from their everyday lives, these essays demonstrate the continuing importance of fairy tales in helping them live well-rounded lives.

This book is written in an accessible style, and draws together a wide range of modern and contemporary Gothic texts from throughout the Americas (including Gothic drama as well as fiction). The title offers a decolonizing approach to the Gothic that has not previously been touched on much in the genre. The book is unique in its treatment of its subject; there are very few titles that study childhood and the Gothic in the Americas

Dreaming of Amelia is the story of Amelia and Riley. They're bad kids from the bad crowd at bad Brookfield High, and they've just transferred to Ashbury. Brilliant, mysterious and probably evil, they have the rich kids at Ashbury spellbound. But just who are Amelia and Riley? Tantalisingly aloof, they are somehow managing to have an extraordinary impact on all the HSC Ashbury students, and the staff. Told through memoirs written as part of the gothic fiction elective in the HSC English exam, Dreaming of Amelia is a story about ghosts, secrets, madness, passion, locked doors, femme fatales - and that terrifying moment in the final year of high school when you realise that the future's come to get you. A brilliant new novel from Jaclyn Moriarty, whose compelling storytelling weaves lyrically around the reader.

Horror, an increasingly popular subject for books, television, and movies, is especially appealing to teenagers who are enthusiastic fans of ghouls and gore. The appeal of horror literature to young adults cannot be denied or ignored, and in Presenting Young Adult Horror Fiction, the first genre study in the Twayne Young Adult Authors Series, Cosette Kies concentrates on teenage interest in the field. Dr. Kies reminds us that the supernatural has a long literary tradition, including such works as Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, Henry James's The Turn of the Screw, and Edgar Allan Poe's short stories. Against this literary background, Dr. Kies takes a witty and perceptive look at contemporary manifestations of horror fiction, highlighting those authors that teenagers particularly enjoy. Writers such as V.C. Andrews, Dean Koontz, John Saul, Anne Rice, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Robert Bloch, Robert MacCammon, and, of course, Stephen King are examined in depth. Each chapter includes an introduction that touches on historical antecedents, a chronology of biographical highlights and major works for the subject author, and a long quote that allows the writer's individual voice to shed light on his or her literary philosophy. Dr. Kies analyzes theme, plot, and character for the major works with perception and skill. Separate chapters explore the appeal of satanism for young adults in novels such as The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby, and there is an irreverent look at a recent development in horror writing--splatterpunk. Presenting Young Adult Horror Fiction is a welcome addition for all those interested in horror literature and will also provide much-needed information for librarians, teachers, and parents who want to understand why young adults love horror literature.

Fans of Aaron Mahnke's "Lore" will be thrilled to read this top bestselling historical-fantasy novel that blurs the line between folklore and reality. Ninety years before the Brothers Grimm penned their version of "Little Red Riding Hood," an historic, gruesome series of events shocked all of Europe. Starting in 1764, an unidentified wolf-like animal ferociously mauled dozens of peasants in the Gévaudan region of France. Whispered rumors of unnatural creatures blended with age-old superstition to cause mass hysteria. Alarmed, King Louis XV sent his best huntsmen to rid the province of the scourge, but this legendary massacre had only just begun. Scarlette, a 19-year-old seamstress who labors to make ends meet, lives under this looming threat. Although fearful of the nightmarish monster lurking in the surrounding forest, she remains naive and skeptical of the dark, supernatural gossip. Until her grandmother is attacked. Scarlette learns her grandmother has been infected by the animal's bite. Desperate to save her, Scarlette begins to uncover the dark secrets of her village and finds there are those who wish to keep their pasts hidden. As time grows short, Scarlette is befriended by a local nobleman and a woodcutter who both share an eerie history with the wolf. Scarlette must unravel the men's connection and solve a long-forgotten crime before her grandmother's infection spreads. Based on both the traditional Grimm fairy-tale and older known French versions of "Little Red Riding Hood", this Gothic novel is set against the historic 18th century Beast of Gévaudan attacks: Attacks which echo the age-old fears that may have inspired the original fairy-tale. Unique to the genre, the novel revives the fable of the girl-in-the-red-cloak with a new historical angle told in a modern-prose style. Buy "Scarlette" today to add some fabled legends to your home library. _____________________________________________________ "Juroe's skill is evident in her writing, since the reader may often feel like s/he is reading a classic gothic romance novel, rather than something created for the modern teenaged audience." - Dayla F. M., Seattle Post-Intelligencer Book Review "Davonna Juroe's Scarlette is a captivating retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. But it is much more than that. Folktale, historical fiction and gothic romance all blend harmoniously in this dark and suspenseful novel. The characters are compelling and complex. The plot will keep you guessing until the very end. The story is beautifully written. With all this in mind, I suspect that Davonna Juroe could be a long-lost Brontë sister." - Jeremy C. Shipp, Bram Stoker Award-nominated author of "Cursed", "Vacation", and "Sheep and Wolves"

Star quarterback with a full-ride to the University of Nebraska; owner of a cherry 1967 Camaro SS; and not bad looking to boot, are all things that should have helped eighteen-year-old Shane Krivich land a girlfriend, or at least squash his virginity. An anxiety monster he refers to as 'Tsar,' who wraps its constricting tentacles if he even thinks of touching a girl, and a best friend named Cam, that will not only sleep with anything with breasts, but try to sway any girl's eye from Shane-it's obvious why he hasn't. Most teenage boys would have snapped from all the years of pent up sexual oppression. Shane's tried not to, but...when he starts hearing a voice in his head and losing moments of time, he believes he's close, and that either a split personality is scratching to get through, or, his intrusive anxiety disorder has gained enough momentum to finally take him over, altering who he is and what he does.... When Shane wins an elusive trip for two to the Ol' British Isle to visit Stonehenge, he takes his best friend and they embark on their first-and what may be their last-great adventure. While abroad, Shane meets two intriguing young women: Autumn, a beautiful, flight attendant; and Kellen, a mystifying physician's assistant with whom he feels an eerie connection. In the ancient lure of England, not only may he finally get to know the true touch of a young woman, but possibly the sinister explanation of why his blackouts have increased and who the mysterious voice is that persists in his head. Is it psychological, or is there some type of ancient evil at play? At the possibility of either, Shane is...THUNDERSTRUCK.
