The long-term consequences of COVID-19 have been tough for children around the world, but even more so for young children already in humanitarian crisis, whether due to conflict, natural disasters, or economic and political upheaval. This book investigates how organizations around the world responded to these dual challenges, identifying solutions, and learning opportunities to help to support young children in ongoing and future crises. Drawing on research and voices from the Global South, this book showcases innovations to mobilize new funds and re-allocate existing resources to protect children during the pandemic. It provides important evidence on understudied and overlooked vulnerable populations, recognizing that researchers from the Global South are best positioned to fill these research gaps, contextualize findings, and support the uptake and adoption of recommendations by local decision-makers and practitioners in those same contexts. The findings in this book will be important for practitioners, policy makers and donors working in or interested in humanitarian contexts, on early childhood development, or early childhood education. The book will also be useful to students and researchers working in these fields. This collection brings together a diverse group of scholars from throughout the world who have grappled with and investigated the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the lives of young children. Profound changes have occurred in all facets of early childhood education and care (ECEC). Young children and their families, college students enrolled in teacher preparation programs, inservice teachers/caregivers, and postsecondary faculty have endured prolonged periods of quarantine, disruption, stress, and grief precipitated by the pandemic. These consequences have been even more challenging for individuals and groups who were already struggling or marginalized prior to the advent of the coronavirus. Collectively, the chapter authors draw upon findings from their research and insights gleaned from professional experiences to recommend ways of providing high-quality programs despite persistent global health threats.

Violence is an all-too-real part of life for children around the globe – regardless of their economic circumstances and sociocultural background – with both immediate and long-term consequences. Available data indicate that children’s experience of violence is widespread, taking different forms: About half the world’s children are subjected to corporal punishment at home; roughly 3 in 4 children between the ages of 2 and 4 years receive violent discipline by parents and other primary caregivers; half of students aged 13 to 15 experience peer violence in and around school; and 1 in 3 adolescent girls aged 15 to 19 have been victims of intimate partner violence. As daily lives and communities are upended by COVID-19, concern is mounting that violence against children may increase. Children with a history of abuse may find themselves even more vulnerable, both at home and online, and may experience more frequent and severe acts of violence. Others may be victimized for the first time. Children’s exposure to increased protection risks as a result of the coronavirus crisis may occur through a number of pathways. The pandemic could result in loss of parental care due to death, illness or separation, thereby placing children at heightened risk for violence, neglect and exploitation.

This book demonstrates how a focus on children’s rights can help practitioners to safeguard children during humanitarian crisis. Child Rights in Humanitarian Crisis focuses on understanding and advancing child rights through practical applications of a child rights perspective in crisis response. The book establishes that with accessible, child-friendly participatory means, crisis response can improve from a child rights perspective and even advance children’s rights whilst also supporting and furthering the development of a child’s agency. The volume presents the reader with a clear focus on children from a range of backgrounds, including those most marginalised, such as children with disabilities. Drawing on expertise from the field as well as academia, and providing practical examples which link case studies to legal policies in recent and protracted humanitarian responses, such as in Turkey and at the Lithuania–Belarus border, this book is a treasure trove of advice from some of the humanitarian and development sector’s most experienced professionals. Combining insights from both research and practice, this book will be an essential read for humanitarian students and practitioners.

The shift from response to recovery is now noticeable as the world moves past the paralyzing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This book explores responses to the pandemic by international, regional, and local institutions, multilateral action, and crisis prevention efforts at different levels of governance, with a specific focus on the situation of women and children. The contributions in this volume address novel topics and expand the analysis to the different challenges faced by women and children, linking these to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, to create a holistic view of the true impact of the pandemic. The focus on international and regional cooperation provides further insights on how management of the COVID-19-induced crisis can be altered and improved. Immediate effects of the pandemic were focused on healthcare, but long-term and knock-on effects spread to different societal sectors and must be analyzed to ensure they will be addressed and, ultimately, resolved.

This book captures a unique moment in time, relatively early into the COVID-19 pandemic, when the implications and consequences of the pandemic remained unclear and largely unpredictable. The contributors to this volume contemplate the impact of the pandemic on our relationships with children and youth, child and youth serving systems, and broader issues in society that directly relate to childhood and youth. The essays collected in this volume cover a variety of perspectives that range from systemic racism in child-serving institutions to the politics of childhood during a pandemic, and the psychological and even neurological impacts of lockdowns, public restrictions and social isolation. Beyond capturing the moment in time, the contributors also focused on the long-term; they contemplated how the evolving situation might affect the way we think about child and youth services and our relationships to children, their families and their communities. From the very theoretical to the concrete and the practical, this volume provides current thinking and practice in relation to pandemic-impacted residential care settings, education and schools, hospital settings, communities, practitioners, and more. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Child & Youth Services.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is also known as SARS-CoV-2, has had a great impact in early childhood education programs. Since the effect of this epidemic was new, and little research had been conducted, this volume is devoted to understanding mutual and contemporary themes in the impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in early childhood education. Early childhood education (ECE) centers encountered unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 crisis. Comprehensive reviews of the literature, descriptions of programs or situations, and research studies provided accounts of current situations in early childhood education including programs and individuals who were working with young children whose ages ranged from birth to eight years of age. The chapters in this special volume discuss how early childhood education faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 crisis and demonstrate the breadth and theoretical effectiveness of this domain. This volume provides a brief introduction that acknowledges the valuable contributions of these chapters to the impact of this pandemic in early childhood education and offers a valuable tool to practitioners and researchers who are conducting studies on the impact of COVID-19. At the beginning of the year 2020, after a December 2019 outburst in China, the World Health Organization acknowledged SARS-CoV-2 as a different kind of coronavirus. It immediately multiplied around the world, mostly through person-to-person contact. Infections ranged from mild to deadly. COVID-19 can cause a respiratory tract infection such as ones sinuses, nose, and throat or lower respiratory tract such as ones windpipe and lungs (World Health Organization, 2020a). On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) affirmed that COVID-19 had become a public health emergency causing an international problem. By March 12, 2020, everybody was aware of this pandemic. It also created an understanding about this first-time consciousness in research about this disease, which generated an immense publication production. It also became the basis for this special volume.

This book looks at the COVID-19 pandemic and its likely aftermath through a four-dimensional prism - aspirations, emotions, thoughts, and sensations to understand human behavior. That perspective opens possibilities to turn the current crisis into an opportunity for positive change; because systematically influencing the various components of our being, individually and collectively, begins by understanding their nature and interaction. Beyond influence this interplay between dimensions can be optimized; which is the purpose of the C-Core (completion, compassion, creativity, cooperation) introduced in the book. In addition, the four determinants that shape institutions: priorities, people, positions, programs - the P-Puzzle are looked at. This book combines theory and concrete suggestions both for policymakers in charge of designing the collective landscape and for individuals who must adapt to, and shape, a new ‘normal’. COVID-19 is a reminder that humans around the World are fundamentally the same. Whether in the long run the Pandemic will bring out the best or the worst in humans depends on individual and collective choices to nurture our best individual and collective selves. COVID-19 may either expand life quality by adding a new breadth of solidarity or reduce Society to mere survival.

This book provides an analysis of Early Childhood Development (ECD) in South Sudanese refugee camps in Uganda, making the case for the design and implementation of programmes for ECD in emergency situations. Illustrating the current place of ECD in the humanitarian landscape and the environment in which South Sudanese refugees in Uganda currently live, this book combines child and human development perspectives to underpin the importance of ECD in emergencies. Developing an ECD tool specific to the cultural context and emergency situation, the author examines the outcomes of an ECD programme focused on refugee children and provides evidence for increased investment into ECD in emergencies. Contributing to the evidence base for Early Childhood Development, this book will be of interest to students, scholars and practitioners who conduct research on ECD, education or humanitarianism in developing countries.
