Excerpt from Young People's History of the Pilgrims One of many correspondents complains that "the trouble with Americans seems to be that they consider that the Pilgrims are a unique creation of their own and that they had 'cornered' the market of the world on them - like the American Indians. It is somewhat hard for them to realize that these Puritans were bonafide, every-day Englishmen." Too true! I have tried to avoid this Yankee tendency, to sketch rather the historical backgrounds, to remember the meanings of words as used in former days, and, in picturing the past, to unshackle our minds from the present. Excerpt from Stories of the Pilgrims A desire to know more of a story than these lessons gave, was another valuable result. For this desire on the part of the children to see a story in its natural setting, and to know what came before and what followed after, showed that they had reached the period which is a happy time for laying a strong foundation upon which to build later work; a. Time in which the awakened interest in people and events should be used to establish a firm basis for future reading and study in both biography and history. The Pilgrim Stories as originally written were read in a number of schools with the same satisfactory results. Now, carefully revised and graded in vocabulary, they are offered in book form with the hope that other pupils and teachers may use them with equal benefit and pleasure. Excerpt from Mary of Plymouth: A Story of the Pilgrim Settlement The purpose of this series of stories is to show the children, and even those who have already taken up the study of history, the home life of the colonists with whom they meet in their books. To this end every effort has been made to avoid anything savor ing of romance, and to deal only with facts, so far as that is possible, while describing the daily life of those people who conquered the Wilderness whether for conscience sake or for gain. That the stories may appeal more directly to the children, they are told from the viewpoint of a child, and purport to have been related by a child. Should any criticism be made regarding the seeming neglect to mention important historical facts, the answer would be that these books are not Sent out as histories, - although it is believed that they will awaken a desire to learn more of the building of the nation, and only such incidents as would be particularly noted by a child are used. Excerpt from Young People's History of Our Country T will be admitted that the history of no other country possesses so absorbing interest as our own. Although a New World, with no antiquity of government, science, or art, it presents the fruitage of the centuries of the Old World. Builded on the lessons and experiences of the ages, its fabric is one of marvellous strength, endurance, and wisdom. In its infancy it was hardened and made rugged by storm, by trial, by privation, and by suffering. The rigors of an unfriendly climate, the enmity of savages, the obstacle of vast primeval for ests, and the choice between perishing from the earth or hewing the road to success, developed the highest form of mental and bodily vigor. Slavery in the Old World taught the blessings of liberty in the New, and our forefathers laid the foundations broad and deep and strong and sure. The Revolution brought the nation into existence and gave it a sisterhood among the peoples of the earth. The War of 1812 was necessary to gain and hold the respect of all countries, and the Civil War cemented and uni hed the house once divided against itself. Beneath the furnace blast we underwent the pangs of transformation, and came forth purified by fire. In this broad, appreciative spirit all children should study the history of our country. Its most impressive lessn will be lost on those who read it as a mere story, without an understanding of the meaning of historical movements and events. Why did the Pilgrims leave their native land to plant their homes in the dismal solitudes of New England? Why did the Cavaliers settle in Virginia? What caused our forefathers to sever their allegiance to Great Britain, and undergo poverty, hunger. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Pilgrims: A Story of Massachusetts This volume is designed to cover the history of New England, in the form of a story, from 1620 to 1644, the period at which the New England colonies formed their first confederation for mutual protection. Mathew Stevens, a youth born at St. Augustine of Spanish and French parents, had been abducted and carried to England, in the year 1586, by Sir Francis Drake, and was there pur chased by Mr. John Robinson, who had compas sion on the child, and brought him up in the fear of the Lord. Thus Mathew Stevens (mattheo Estevan), though born of a Catholic father, became an English Puritan. By transferring the Estevan family from Florida to England, they are changed from Spanish to English, without breaking the lineal descent from the first youth who sailed with Columbus to Mathew Stevens the young Puritan. His romantic adventures and singular love affair form the chief groundwork for this story. In order that the reader may have a better idea of the Pilgrims and their peculiar persecutions, the story Opens with their flight into Holland. Just a glimpse of their life in Leyden is given, and they are hastened on board the Mayflower, where will be found as full and accurate an account of their memorable voyage as can be given without weary ing one with useless detail. Though the Pilgrims and the colony of. Massachusetts form the main features of the story, it embraces the history of North America from the time at which the novel Pocahontas left off, to the year when the col onies of New England were united.
