All Labels Aside is about one woman's journey into discovering she has autism. It follows the quirks and challenges of her life, her diagnosis, and shares the ways she has found to cope and love herself deeper than she ever thought possible. In this memoir, she is able to relate her incredible struggle to come to terms with balancing the label of autism and deep, profound, spiritual truths at the same time.Have you ever questioned your own life or the perspective of a loved one who may have autism? Have you struggled with the ups and downs of finding your authentic self amidst a world of strange social constructs we are expected to follow? This book is not only relatable to that struggle, but helpful in the fact that it does provide encouragement of what works for some of the symptoms of autism. The author wrote this book with a spiritual twist, not because she wanted to make her life public; but because there was an inner calling by the book itself to be written and shared with the world. This work of inspiration is her first book. She received her diagnosis relatively late in life, at age 36, after wondering for years what was wrong with herself socially. After researching social disorders and reading many blogs of others with an autism diagnosis, learned the striking differences between male and female characteristics of this neurological condition, a light went on and, after a year of mulling it over, got her own diagnosis, confirming what she already knew to be true. As the book called to be brought forth, the reason seemed that there was not much for autism in the way of spiritual guidance and integration of the condition. She read many autobiographies of others with the autism diagnosis, and while they were fascinating, they did not provide a deeper call to spiritual authenticity. This book also describes the author discovering what did and did not serve her soul, mind, and body, as she learned how to create an environment for herself that was soothing instead of jarring, minimizing over-stimulation and leading to a much better quality of life for her and those who know her. As soon as she knew the truth about how her brain was wired, the rest of her life suddenly made sense; school, friends, romantic relationships (not all of which were pleasant), the work force, and the seemingly endless issues or misunderstandings she found in each of these areas were no longer shocking and surprising to her. This book covers each topic of social interaction from the author's unique perspective. A wonderful contribution to the world of autism autobiographies, this book is simply another perspective to be understood by those who wish to take yet another glance into the inner world of autism, which is completely different for each individual who experiences it. Thank you for reading!

This is an excellent travelers' guide because it is written by people who have been there. The stories are enthralling and the authors' experiences enable us to understand the culture and perspective of people with autistic spectrum disorder. This book is recommended for anyone who has embarked on a journey to explore a part of our world that we have only recently discovered.' - from the foreword by Tony Attwood 'I had a great many of my hunches and hopes confirmed when I read the words of the generous parents, and their even more generous children, who contributed to this book ... Most important, I learned it is possible to be inspired to see the glass as half full, no matter how many leaks there seem to be in the cup ... I believe the community who reads this book will join me in thanking those who wrote it, for their courage, their wit and their plethora of ideas.' - from the foreword by Liane Holliday Willey For the families who have contributed to this book, living with autism spectrum disorders has been a journey of self-discovery. With honesty and humor, they describe the ways autism has affected their daily lives, the challenges they have faced and the approaches they have found beneficial. They share their practical and original strategies for dealing with issues such as helping children to develop empathy and humor, developing and maintaining friendships and explaining their autism spectrum disorders to other people. This book will be a source of advice and inspiration for families of children with autism and the professionals who work with them. It is practical, realistic and positive - autism is seen as something to be understood and celebrated. As 11-year-old Glen states in the Appendix, written by some of the children with autism featured in the book: 'I like myself and consider my difference something positive.' Linda Andron is a licensed clinical social worker, Adjunct Lecturer in Psychiatry and Bio-Behavioural Sciences and Clinical Instructor at the University of California at Los Angeles. She is the director of the UCLA Family Support Community Program and the clinical director of the Center for Asperger's Assessment and Intervention at the HELP Group. She has worked with over 500 families of children with High Functioning Autism and Asperger Syndrome and is a member of the Professional Advisory Board of the Autism Society of Los Angeles. Cindy Rasmussen wrote this story for her children to help them understand what happened in their family when they were growing up, from the perspective of a Mom. Her eldest son, Mark, was only 19 months old when her autistic son, Steven, was born and only 2 1/2 when the first serious problems began. Steven was 6 years old when Geoffrey was born. So although they were there for most of the journey, they have little memory or understanding of the most difficult years for our family. It is her hope that as adults they can read her account and gain a deeper insight and understanding into things that took place in their childhoods and that this knowledge might help them as they go forward in their own lives.

Having a child with autism presents many hard questions: What will my child’s life look like if he or she never gains maturity and independence? How will allowing my child to transition to a group home affect the family? What will happen when I can no longer take care of my child because I’m too old? What will happen if my child outlives me? The good news is that there is hope. If you as a parent become an advocate for your loved one with special needs, you can answer these and many other questions. In Journey to Acceptance author Michelle Vanessa O’Reilly delivers an honest reflection on the life of a mother navigating the challenges of raising an autistic child. She has learned to listen closely to Jesus’s voice as she makes decisions in this journey, and now she seeks to give encouragement and insight to other families who are beginning their own journeys. In this personal narrative, one woman chronicles how perseverance, faith, and love helped her find an ideal placement for her son, some peace for family, and encouragement for others.

Candid, Vulnerable, Informative, Inspirational When Skyler was three years old, he was diagnosed with severe, non-verbal autism. When he was 17, his mom wrote a book about his amazing life. From page one, Welcome to My Life delivers on its promise to place you squarely in Skyler's life, surrounded by mom and dad, Laurie and Josh, and superstar sister, Kendall. Detailed sensory descriptions take you to doctors' appointments and trick-or-treating, to Qdoba and the kitchen table, to the bathroom for another "pull-ups" change, to family gatherings, to the Autism Center, and to conversations and internal dialogue so honest that you'll feel like you're part of the family too. Welcome to My Life shares the 14-year journey of a true warrior mom advocating for her non-verbal, severely autistic son from diagnosis through his teenage years. This brutally honest and heartwarming account details the daily struggles and often lack of social understanding that families face when raising a child who relies on parental assistance for every need. "A memoir like no other -- truthful and raw, hilarious and unexpected, heartbreaking and uplifting. Laurie L. Hellmann's Welcome to My Life is a love letter to her son Skyler and a welcome letter to the masses. It is dose of reassurance to us all, and a reminder that the world -- even when it's unpredictable and frightening -- is still shimmering with silver linings and powerful lessons." Because He Has No Words and Yet So Much to Say For mothers and fathers, sister and brothers, autism isn't a personal diagnosis ... it's a family diagnosis. Especially when your autistic loved one copes with significant development delays, suffers from serious chronic medical conditions, is an insomniac, and exhibits behaviors that disrupt the flow of day-to-day life. Autism turns households inside out, cracks hearts wide open and turns daily routines upside down. Take a journey with Laurie L. Hellmann and explore: -- How Skyler's autism diagnosis shook and then restored her faith -- The realities of navigating divorce, co-parenting and new love when your child has special needs -- The emotional and physical toll (on Skyler and his family) of countless medical and behavioral treatments -- The difference between hope, false hope, acceptance and gratitude in the face of disappointment, uncertainty and fear -- The effects of autism on sibling relationships -- How autism can challenge and strengthen a marriage -- Why laughter is good medicine for us all Experience the laughter and love, unspoken bonds and unflagging devotion of one very special family. And be changed forever by the knowledge that a mother's love knows no bounds, and that autism -- though it presents various challenges -- does not define who a person is nor does it devalue or diminish their contributions to this world.
