Despite its importance, youth policy is an often-ignored area of Government planning and legislation, and policy initiatives seem to lack any guiding theme or relevance to the needs of young people. In Youth Policy in the 1990s originally published in 1992, the editors brought together prominent experts in the key areas of youth policy at the time. They provide a critical review of the major issues which implicitly or explicitly affect the world of adolescents and examine to what extent they paint a picture of existing youth policy. The aim was to provide a baseline for a policy on youth in the 1990s. The book recommends the introduction of a Minister for Young People and the use of youth impact statements at national and local level and seeks to provide information and argument for those seeking to plan policy for young people from a corporate or inter-agency perspective. The contributors are all recognized experts in their fields. They tackle their topic first by examining the historical perspective, with a special concentration on the previous decade. Each has paid regard to particular themes – ethnicity, class and gender, and where possible, has brought in material from other countries and cultures. They have then put forward suggestions for future policy.

Choice Recommended Read Leo B. Hendry is one of the foremost developmental psychologists of his generation. His diverse range of interests have included studies on young people’s involvement in competitive sports, investigations into teacher and pupil relations in school, adolescents’ leisure pursuits and their family relations, parenting styles, youth workers and mentoring, youth unemployment, adolescent health behaviours, and transition to early adulthood. His research interests now include work on ageing and retirement. Developmental Transitions across the Lifespan is the first collection of Hendry’s works, and essentially joins the dots to provide an overarching perspective on lifespan development through a dynamic systems theory approach. Underpinned by empirical research, this collection of journal articles and book chapters is linked by a contemporary commentary which not only contextualises each piece within today’s research climate, but builds to provides an unorthodox, comprehensive but above all compelling perspective on human development from childhood to old age. Leo B. Hendry’s research output has been significant and influential. This is an important book that will provide students and researchers in developmental psychology not only with an opportunity to view his contribution holistically, but in connecting his range of research interests, provides a new contribution to our understanding of lifespan development in its own right.

Long-running trends towards increasing inequality between the rich and poor across Europe have been exacerbated by the 2008 global financial crisis and its aftermath. As employment opportunities for young people diminish and as the welfare state is pulled back, pathways to adulthood change and become more difficult to navigate. Transitions to Adulthood Through Recession consists of a collection of papers by researchers from Britain, Norway, Germany, Portugal, Italy and Greece, locating young people’s transitions to adulthood in their national social, economic and political contexts. It explores young adulthood with reference to generational continuity and change and intergenerational support. With a cross-national comparative framework, this volume highlights the importance of variations in structural contexts for young people’s transitions. Bringing together authors across sub-disciplines such as the sociology of youth, family and kinship, class and inequality and life-course studies, Transitions to Adulthood Through Recession will appeal to academic social scientists as well as final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in fields such as political science, sociology, youth studies, social policy, anthropology and psychology; and a wider public readership. A Companion To Life Course Studies written by Michael E.J. Wadsworth and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03-28 with Social Science categories.

Since the end of the Second World War, society has been characterised by rapid and extensive political, economic, scientific, and technological change. Opportunities for education, employment, human relations, and good health, have all been greatly affected by those changes, as have all aspects of life. Consequently, each post-war generation has been like no other before or since. Britain, uniquely, has five large-scale life course studies that began at intervals throughout that period. They have shown how lives are shaped by individual characteristics, their past and current experiences and opportunities, and so reflect their times. This book describes those fundamental changes that affected life chances differently in each generation, and how governments struggled to accommodate the changes with new policies for improving and managing the nation's capital in terms of education, family policy, health, human rights, and economics. A Companion to Life Course Studies provides a resource for the interpretation of the findings and design differences in the five studies, and the stimulus for new comparisons of life course between these differing generations that would contribute to policy and to understanding.
