The purpose of this volume is to present the whole story of our research program on alternative interventions with delinquent youth. It is our goal to describe the development of an alternative intervention model, to examine its salient processes, to provide a test of its relative effective ness, and to give a description of its systemic impacts. The process described was based on the notion that improvement in our approaches to troubled youth lies in a systematic examination of the efficacy of innovative models. As the reader is probably aware, the history of inter ventions with troubled youth is more a record of failure than success. Thus, the search for alternatives is extremely critical. The book proceeds as a detailed research monograph. The first four chapters describe the historical and theoretical antecedents of the devel opment of the research program. Chapters 5 through 11 describe re search on the efficacy of alternative intervention approaches for delin quent youth, research on the impact on nonprofessional change agents, an attempt to integrate contemporary theoretical propositions about de linquency causation and the effects observed, and research examining the systemic consequences of providing innovative interventions to de linquent youth. The final chapter integrates the findings with contempo rary work and provides suggestions for future work.

This book offers the first comprehensive introduction to Results Mapping, an in novative approach for assessing the worth of hard-to-evaluate social, health, and education programs. Results Mapping represents a true milestone in program evaluation-a milestone both as methodology for program accountability and as a technique for program improvement. It is relevant across a wide spectrum of pub lic health, social service, and systems-building initiatives. It introduces "new sci ence" into the field of program evaluation. It merges common sense with structured logic. It retains the richness of real world success stories without sacri ficing a hard-nosed focus on quantitative data and measurable outcomes. The contents of this book are directly pertinent for program leadership and staff, for sponsors and funders in the public and private sectors, and for those charged with assessing, documenting and analyzing the effects of program activ ity. Success Stories as Hard Data is designed to be readable, practical, and clear. Its author does not ignore previous scholarly work, but chooses to emphasize real world applications. For this Dr. Kibei is to be applauded.

Participatory Budgeting—the experiment in democracy that could redefine how public budgets are decided in the United States. Democracy Reinvented is the first comprehensive academic treatment of participatory budgeting in the United States, situating it within a broader trend of civic technology and innovation. This global phenomenon, which has been called "revolutionary civics in action" by the New York Times, started in Brazil in 1989 but came to America only in 2009. Participatory budgeting empowers citizens to identify community needs, work with elected officials to craft budget proposals, and vote on how to spend public funds. Democracy Reinvented places participatory budgeting within the larger discussion of the health of U.S. democracy and focuses on the enabling political and institutional conditions. Author and former White House policy adviser Hollie Russon Gilman presents theoretical insights, indepth case studies, and interviews to offer a compelling alternative to the current citizen disaffection and mistrust of government. She offers policy recommendations on how to tap online tools and other technological and civic innovations to promote more inclusive governance. While most literature tends to focus on institutional changes without solutions, this book suggests practical ways to empower citizens to become change agents. Reinvesting in Democracy also includes a discussion on the challenges and opportunities that come with using digital tools to re-engage citizens in governance.

The goal of Advances in Clinical Child Psychology is to provide clinicians and researchers in clinical child psychology, child psychiatry, and relat ed mental health disciplines with an annual compilation of statements that summarize the new data, concepts, and techniques that advance our ability to help troubled children. Looking forward, the series intends to highlight the emerging developments that will guide our field of inquiry and practice. Looking back, the dozen volumes in this series chronicle the changes in our attempts to understand and solve the psychological problems of children and adolescents. Each year, scholars are chosen whose recent work is on the leading edge of clinical child psychology and related disciplines. They are se lected either because their own work offers potentially important new information or theoretical viewpoints or because they are especially well qualified to discuss critical topics in the field that are not identified with one particular research program.
