Contemporary Africa is demographically characterized above all else by its youthfulness. In East Africa the median age of the population is now a striking 17.5 years, and more than 65 percent of the population is age 24 or under. This situation has attracted growing scholarly attention, resulting in an important and rapidly expanding literature on the position of youth in African societies. While the scholarship examining the contemporary role of youth in African societies is rich and growing, the historical dimension has been largely neglected in the literature thus far. Generations Past seeks to address this gap through a wide-ranging selection of essays that covers an array of youth-related themes in historical perspective. Thirteen chapters explore the historical dimensions of youth in nineteenth-, twentieth-, and twenty-first–century Ugandan, Tanzanian, and Kenyan societies. Key themes running through the book include the analytical utility of youth as a social category; intergenerational relations and the passage of time; youth as a social and political problem; sex and gender roles among East African youth; and youth as historical agents of change. The strong list of contributors includes prominent scholars of the region, and the collection encompasses a good geographical spread of all three East African countries.

The book takes a cursory look at the drivers and the directions of Africa’s developmental drive as a largely developing continent within the frameworks of the ever-dynamic global space, putting into perspective inherent challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century, and thereafter. Being the continent with most youthful population, Africa appears to still lack in requisite innovative interventions to transmute such demographic dividend into economic opportunities for the benefits of the larger population. Besides, impacts of climate change on the continent have also implied unstructured migratory trend within and beyond the bounds of the continent. Africa has continued to play a feeble role in various United Nations (UN)-enabled ‘Conference of Parties’ (COP) negotiations, such as the COP-26 in Glasgow, Scotland (2021). The management of recent Covid-19 epidemic across the world has presented a clear pointer to Africa that except development is internally-driven, no one is ready to exogenously drive sustainable good life for others. Ostensible ‘vaccine nationalism’ that has dotted the production and availability of various Covid-19 vaccine brands, which has ultimately left Africa as the ‘begging continent’ one more time calls for in-depth interrogation in contextualizing what the place of Africa has been, is and to be within the global interactive mode.

Zambia is a remarkable country on a remarkable continent, whose inhabitants to a large extent are still mostly poor, but who are rightfully called "entrepreneurs at heart". As the Economist put it: The 21st Century is the African Century. "Young Zambia" portrays Zambia, as a country "amidst poverty and abundant resources". In spite of major attractions such as the amazing Victoria Falls and vast national parks, Zambia is not yet widely known as a tourist destination. Among business people Zambia has a reputation of being Africa's second biggest producer of copper and being rich in other natural resources and gemstones. Adding to this, Zambia has recently been working on setting up a framework for becoming a major digital hub in Africa. Last but not least, NGOs and political observers praise Zambia for its history of several peaceful transitions between different ruling parties - s.th. not yet to be taken for granted in Africa. In August 2021 Zambian voters went to the polls bringing in the so-called New Dawn Government under President Hakainde Hichilema - a change which has since attracted a lot of international attention and caused the local currency Kwacha to appreciate. The "Young Zambia" team of Zambian experts on country and people was thus inspired to work on a new edition of the book, which was first published in October 2019. The new Africa Edition - among other things - includes information on Covid-19 in Zambia - and will become available both in Zambia and Europe.
