Monster Of God written by David Quammen and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-21 with Nature categories.

For millennia, nature's biggest and fiercest predators have tormented mankind. The knowledge and fear of the existence of these ferocious man-eaters is forever in the back of our minds, looming in our worst nightmares. Millions of humans have suffered attacks by predators on land and at sea. Yet animals have always shared the landscape with humans. Since the dawn of time our ecosystems have been linked and humans have co-existed with flesh-eating beasts as members of the same food chain. Now, of course, as humans spread and despoil the planet, these fearsome predators may only survive on the other side of glass barriers and chain-link fences. Their gradual disappearance is changing the nature of our own existence. We no longer occupy an intermediate position on the food chain; instead we survey it invulnerably from above - so far above that we are in danger of forgetting that we even belong to an ecosystem. David Quammen's enthralling new book covers the four corners of the globe as he explores the fate of lions in India's Gir forest, saltwater crocodiles in Northern Australia, brown bears in the mountains of Romania, and Siberian tigers. Tracking these great and terrible beasts through the toughest terrain in the world, Quammen is equally intrigued by the traditional relationship between the great predators and the people who live among them, and weaves into his story the fears and myths that have haunted humankind for 3000 years.

This book sets out to inspire and educate children, who, for one reason or another, have difficult starts in life either by fate or disability. Each chapter provides a human lesson and human qualities through adventure, including: empathy, bravery, honour, friendship and resilience in the face of adversity. Based on an island in South East Queensland, Australia, four children, who attend the same island state school, are all miserable at home and school until Parlow, the pelican, comes knocking on Tommy's window one night to offer him a better life. Tommy thinks he is dreaming as do his friends--Maria, Dino and Jake--who all have an out of body experience and are taken to an enchanted underwater sea world beneath Mangrove Sands, where they meet talking animals who have their own language and become the children's tutors, mentors and friends. Through an enchanting underwater sea world of magic, adventure and humour, Mangrove Sands aims to provide hope and inspiration to children around the globe facing adversity.

The entire Australian continent was once covered with networks of Indigenous placenames. These names often evoke important information about features of the environment and their place in Indigenous systems of knowledge. On the other hand, placenames assigned by European settlers and officials are largely arbitrary, except for occasional descriptive labels such as 'river, lake, mountain'. They typically commemorate people, or unrelated places in the Northern hemisphere. In areas where Indigenous societies remain relatively intact, thousands of Indigenous placenames are used, but have no official recognition. Little is known about principles of forming and bestowing Indigenous placenames. Still less is known about any variation in principles of placename bestowal found in different Indigenous groups. While many Indigenous placenames have been taken into the official placename system, they are often given to different features from those to which they originally applied. In the process, they have been cut off from any understanding of their original meanings. Attempts are now being made to ensure that additions of Indigenous placenames to the system of official placenames more accurately reflect the traditions they come from. The eighteen chapters in this book range across all of these issues. The contributors (linguistics, historians and anthropologists) bring a wide range of different experiences, both academic and practical, to their contributions. The book promises to be a standard reference work on Indigenous placenames in Australia for many years to come.

Roadkill Recipes written by Patricia Leeuwenburg and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Cooking, Australian categories.

"'Roadkill Recipes: Australian Wildlife on the Verge' portrays an overview of Australian roadkill with a twist for the gallivanting gourmet. The beautifully photographed book highlights the confronting issue of roadkill, emphasising important conservation and road safety messages whilst satirising glossy cookbooks and gourmet travel. There is increasing awareness of roadkill as an important conservation issue. The dual meaning of the title was chosen as a reminder that wherever roads encroach into wildlife habitat there will be wildlife: both on the verge of the road and in some cases on the verge of extinction. Our native animals use both the road and verge environment as transport corridors and as an easy, often preferable resource area. Unfortunately the indiscriminate, contemporary predator of this environment, the car or truck, can place vulnerable species or populations on the verge of extinction. Many native Australian species are already stressed from habitat loss, predation and disease. For those species, the added pressures of roadkill really can lead to wildlife populations existing 'on the verge'. We believe that bringing the subject of roadkill to a broader audience will encourage debate and build greater awareness of what to expect on the road, serving both road safety and wildlife conservation efforts. Bon appetit!"--Provided by publisher.
