Habitée par l'énigme, l'image ne cesse de nous provoquer dans nos certitudes et ouvre au " leurre " comme à la " présence ", dirait Yves Bonnefoy. Dans ce livre qui est consacré à son œuvre, l'image se trahira sans cesse : éclaire-t-elle ou trompe-t-elle l'être dans son rapport au monde ? Lumière ou nuit de l'image ? Parfois le poète se prononce en faveur de l'image : " L'homme a besoin d'images ". Yves Bonnefoy invoque alors " le blé de l'image ", mais ailleurs il la dévalorise et va jusqu'à mentionner " la boue de l'image aux yeux déserts ", voire sa disparition " Et bientôt même il n'y a plus d'image ", car " leur syntaxe est incohérence, de la cendre ". Il en vient ainsi à répudier l'image qui méconnaîtrait la finitude de ce dont elle est l'image, ce " dehors du sens " qui appelle tantôt " un irréparable silence ", tantôt le pouvoir, sans cesse en éveil, de revivifier son apparition. Yves Bonnefoy n'a cependant jamais renoncé à interroger l'image : simple réfraction ontologique ? réinvention du réel ? facteur de rassemblement ? " Point de contact " entre les êtres, l'image pourrait devenir une expérience de la plénitude du réel mais aussi bien de sa vanité. Dans ce livre plusieurs chercheurs. fidèles à l'âpre mise en question de l'image, poursuivie sa vie durant par Yves Bonnefoy, vont aborder celle-là à travers tous ses aspects : littéraire, poétique, plastique, musical, architectural. Plus que jamais, sous ces filtres divers, l'image apparaîtra dans sa profonde ambivalence : lumière ou nuit ?
