Genocide in the Congo/Zaire exposes incredible and horrific atrocities taking place in the heart of Africa, in the Congo/Zaire, a country that is as big as all of Western Europe or the United States East of the Mississippi River. The World, though, is silent over 1.7 million deaths, a number larger that the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Why the silence? How come the American mainstream media has not raised hell or demanded action? Is this a repeat of the 1960’s when the American Government and its CIA engaged in covert operations to kill foreign heads of states and destabilize foreign governments that they did not like? What is happening in the Congo comes close to that. The 1.7 million Congolese have died with the financial, military and political blessings and help of the US Government, Western Europe (The Paris Club), and the mining Conglomerates. Who own the media outlets? Who finance the politicians’ campaigns? This book exposes, both in words and pictures, the genocide and humanitarian misery being directed by President Clinton, Europe and the companies that are enriching themselves over Congo’s mineral wealth. Because President Kabila of the Congo wants a fair deal for the wealth of his country, Clinton and the West don’t like him. So he must be removed, like it was done to Patrice Lumumba in the 60’s. In this process, already 1.7 million Congolese have died. Would genocide, rape, and mutilations of the Congolese be President Clinton’s Congo Legacy?

Fiction. "Zaire" is a bizarre, emotionally intense and often horrific novel which has the atmosphere of a political thriller. The main character, Philippe, is sent to London to do a job with an awkward name: Lumumba. It is a name which takes us back to the Congo of 1960, a name which stands for all of Africa and the tragedy of an entire continent. In a world where idealism has no place Philippe must negotiate some sort of peace for himself and throw the gears of the death machine into reverse. In Philippe, Harry Smart has created an engaging hero, whose predicament and that of his country, will stay with the reader long after the book is finished. Harry Smart has published three collections of poetry. He was born in the North of England and lives in Montrose, Scotland. This is his first novel.

A fascinating account of a huge Central African country, almost completely unprepared for liberation from colonial rule in 1960 and plunged into the anarchy of factional struggles for central power, against a background of regional separatism. A UN force stepped in to prevent the mineral-rich province of Katanga from breaking away and stayed for nearly four years, after which quarrelling warlords fought for central power, or for or against separatism. In 1965, Mobutu came to power, ruling as a dictator his Single-Party State, until he was finally toppled in 1997 by a Tutsi-backed invasion force led by Kabila.

Zaire, apparently strong and stable under Presdident Mobutu in the early 1970s, was bankrupt and discredited by the end of that decade, beset by hyperinflation and mass corruption, the populace forced into abject poverty. Why and how, in a new african state strategically located in Central Africa and rich in mineral resources, did this happen? How did the Zairian state become a “parasitic predator” upon its own people?

Zaire is a country at a crossroads - a land with abundant agriculture, mineral and human resources, and yet economically deeply paralysed and struggling to implement a successful strategy for social and economic development. These essays by Zairian academics in the fields of politics, sociology and economics describe post- independence social structures - so damagingly imitative of colonial patterns - and the inadquacy of the single Party-State regime, which has replicated western capitalism. The educational system, hardly changed from that inherited from the colonial power, is discussed; and an up-to-date economic analysis of the country today is included. A range of measures are recommended which could be adopted by a responsible ruling class; but first they, and their western ally, must seriously address the questions.
