Zalmoxis written by Lucian Blaga and has been published by Histria Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-18 with Philosophy categories.

Lucian Blaga (1895-1961) is judged by many to be Romania’s most original philosopher and greatest poet of the twentieth century. While scholars with access to his works in Romanian are well-aware of their importance, his work has remained, up to now, little known in the English-speaking world. The book represents one of the first efforts to make Blaga’s work accessible to an international audience. Zalmoxis is Blaga’s first play and one of his most important literary works. It underlines much of his philosophy and also reflects his poetry. Blaga’s attachment to Expressionist ideals is discernible in his treatment of the characters primarily as vehicles of ideas and his preference for primitive nature over the cultured metropolis. This book includes an introduction by Keith Hitchins of the University of Illinois, one of the leading historians of Romania in the United States and a scholar intimately acquainted with Blaga’s life and work. In it, he discusses the life of Lucian Blaga, and the importance of his literary and philosophical work. The translation is by Doris Plantus-Runey from Wayne State University in the United States.

In Romanian spirituality, Blaga was guided by his philosophical inclinations and lyric sensibility. He put himself in the figure of Zamolxe, and thus the portrait of the Dacian prophet that emerges is, in some sense, a self-portrait. It is Blaga, disguised as Zamolxe, who confronts the mystery of existence and seeks the meaning of cultural style and who tests hypotheses that will reach their fullest expression later in the trilogies.Zamolxe is divided into three acts of three scenes each, which introduce the principal characters-Zamolxe, the High Priest, and the Dacians-and depict their relations with one another. In composition the play resembles a poem, as Blaga reveals his characters through monologues and dialogues rather than through action. The main conflict is one of ideas between Zamolxe and the High Priest, who are at odds over how men shall relate to the world. The High Priest, who resides in the city, stands for the old order, the traditional polytheistic faith, which has become institutionalized and has separated the Dacians from nature. He represents the aspirations of established theology, which taught that the ultimate principle in the world was of a rational, intellectual nature. His god was Apollonic and, thus, from Blaga's perspective, he represented the Latin depths of the Romanian soul. But Zamolxe, who lives close to nature and shuns the city, heralds a new beginning, a religion that will reconcile the Dacians with their true essence. The Great Blind Man, whose truth he preaches, is an instinctual and vitalist divinity who instills in men a frenetic energy to experience life and to become emotionally fused with all of surrounding nature. He is a Dionysian divinity who symbolizes repressed unconscious impulses and is the spirit behind the intermittent revolts Blaga perceived of the Romanians' non-Latin essence. Blaga's attachment to Expressionist ideals is thus discernible in his treatment of the characters as vehicles of ideas and in his preference for primitive nature over the sophisticated metropolis.

Caves and the Ancient Greek Mind analyses techniques of searching for ultimate wisdom in ancient Greece. The Greeks perceived mental experiences of exceptional intensity as resulting from divine intervention. They believed that to share in the immortals' knowledge, one had to liberate the soul from the burden of the mortal body by attaining an altered state of consciousness, that is, by merging with a superhuman being or through possession by a deity. These states were often attained by inspired mediums, `impresarios of the gods' - prophets, poets, and sages - who descended into caves or underground chambers. Yulia Ustinova juxtaposes ancient testimonies with the results of modern neuropsychological research. This novel approach enables an examination of religious phenomena not only from the outside, but also from the inside: it penetrates the consciousness of people who were engaged in the vision quest, and demonstrates that the darkness of the caves provided conditions vital for their activities.

Lore And Science In Ancient Pythagoreanism written by Walter Burkert and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1972 with Fiction categories.

For this first English edition of his distinguished study of Pythagoreanism, Weisheit und Wissenschajt: Studien zu Pythagoras, Philolaos, und Platon, Walter Burkert has carefully revised text and notes, taking account of additional literature on the subject which appeared between 1962 and 1969. By a thorough critical sifting of all the available evidence, the author lays a new foundation for the understanding of ancient Pythagoreanism and in particular of the relationship within it of "lore" and "science." He shows that in the twilight zone when the Greeks were discovering the rational interpretation of the world and quantitative natural science, Pythagoras represented not the origin of the new, but the survival or revival of ancient, pre-scientific lore or wisdom, based on superhuman authority and expressed in ritual obligation.
