Excerpt from Zanzibar in Contemporary Times: A Short History of the Southern East in the Nineteenth Century IT has been my endeavour in the following chapters to describe briefly the most interesting persons and events that are connected with the history of the Rulers of Zanzibar and their Dominions on the East Coast of Africa during the nineteenth century, and to give some account of this Island of the Southern East, its people and industries. The story is that of an Arab potentate from the Persian Gulf founding a nation in a land which from time imme morial had been colonized by his countrymen; of a small and unnoticed, almost unknown island, advancing to wealth and fame, enslaving half a continent and afterwards at death grips with the Powers of Christendom; of those Powers, like vultures upon the prey, dividing the spoils of their exhausted victim; and of an island, still perhaps to some extent in the trough, yet buoyant and of fair promise. "First published in 1919 and written in the style of the times, Zanzibar Island Metropolis of Eastern Africa explores the fascinating history, culture and landscape of Zanzibar and manages to be a piece of history in its own right. Written while Zanzibar was still ruled by Sultans and a British protectorate, this 'Lonely Planet' of its day is a remarkable snapshot of a bygone era, while still containing insightful and relevant information for today's reader. Of particular interest is the discovery of how little Zanzibar has changed in the last century, from the friendly and welcoming nature of its people, to the sights and smells of the Darajani fish market. Perfect for history buffs, Zanzibar - Island Metropolis of Eastern Africa takes readers on a journey through Zanzibar and its people over the past 2000 years, discusses the geography and farming of the island, and the conditions of Stone Town - the 'City of Zanzibar' at a unique point in the island's history."--Jacket.

This is a general introduction to Tanzania. It's also a look at Tanzania from a contemporary and historical perspective. The focus is on Tanzania today. Some of the major political, economic and social developments which have taken place in the country especially since the seventies also constitute a significant part of the book. The book is intended for those who are going to Tanzania for the first time and for anybody else who wants to learn some basic facts about the largest country in East Africa. Readers are also going to learn quite a few things about the people of Tanzania and their tribes or ethnic groups and where these groups traditionally live. Also covered in the book are the towns and cities in all the provinces of this large country. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive picture of the country by focusing on a number of areas including a general background of Tanzania; the geography of the country; life in Tanzania today and how life was in the seventies and eighties under socialism known as ujamaa which means familyhood in Kiswahili; the country's transition from socialism to a free market economy; ethnic groups or tribes and their home districts and regions; racial minorities who constitute a significant part of Tanzania's population; the Swahili people and their culture; towns and cities; the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and its prospects and challenges; and life in Tanzania - in what was then Tanganyika - in the fifties just before independence. There are also chapters on Dar es Salaam, the nation's largest city and commercial centre and former capital, and on the former island nation of Zanzibar. Tanzania also is unique in one fundamental respect. It's the only union of two independent countries ever formed on the African continent. And it's the only one that exists today almost half a century after it was formed. The union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar is one of the subjects covered in the book, and readers are going to learn about one of the most important events in the history of post-colonial Africa on a continent where the quest for unity has remained an elusive dream since independence in the fifties and sixties. The book also includes a lot of information on Tanganyika just before independence and how it became one of the first countries in Africa to emerge from colonial rule. Also included is some material on one of the most interesting ethnic groups in African history and how it came into being. It's the Swahili whose language is also known as Swahili especially among many people around the world who are not native speakers of the language. Among the native speakers, the language is called Kiswahili. It's the main language spoken in Tanzania and Kenya. It's also spoken in several other countries in east-central Africa. And we are going to learn something about this language which transcends ethnicity. Kiswahili is not identified with any African tribe, making it a truly Pan-African language building bridges across ethnicity, cultures and nations especially in the eastern part of the continent. And as you learn about Tanzania, you are also going to learn a few things about an area bigger than Tanzania because of the country's connection to other parts of East Africa and beyond.

*Includes pictures *Includes various explorers' accounts of Zanzibar at different times *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "It was then capital of an Afro-Arab dynasty, a centre of commerce and international diplomacy, a seat of learning...and a gateway to Africa."- Abdul Sheriff, 1995 Situated about 25 miles off the Tanzanian coast, Zanzibar, with its sultans and spices, merchants and mosques, dhows and doorways of richly carved timber, has captured the imagination of travelers and writers for hundreds of years. It has long evoked a romantic mystique, calling up images of an island paradise in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Its gleaming Muslim Swahili town, built of white coralline limestone, can trace approximately a thousand years of maritime trading, and it also sustained a plantation economy based principally on slaves and cloves. Stone Town is one of the few historic trading cities from the Swahili civilization that remains a viable urban center to this day. For much of the last millennium, Zanzibar served as the center of maritime interaction and trade between Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and India, and the architectural and urban heritage of the island reflects the complex fusion of these cultural spheres. By tracing the changes seen in the archaeological record, it is possible to identify the transformations that occurred in the landscape, people, and architecture of Zanzibar. The earliest known people to call Zanzibar home, the Swahili, built their iconic coral rag houses on the strategically important Shangani Peninsula. It was therefore a populated-though sparsely so-island that European traders discovered during the Age of Exploration. The main settlement in Zanzibar was Mji Mkongwe ("old town" in Swahili), better known as Stone Town. It is today but one part of the modern Zanzibar City, but it is a site that has gone through many fascinating stages of development in history. Starting as a small and nondescript fishing village, the settlement became a royal residence and commercial bazaar through a complicated network of ethnic and cultural relations. The Portuguese were especially prominent in their activities in Stone Town, though their influence declined at the close of the 17th century, when the sultans of Oman emerged as the dominant political and economic force in the Indian Ocean region and eventually established Zanzibar as their base of operations. Tremendous amounts of wealth and influence were earned by Indian and Arab traders engaging in the clove and slave trade, and it was these two groups that had the longest lasting influence on the island's tangible formation to the present day. From the latter 19th century, the British exerted pressure and influence on Zanzibar in an attempt to end the centuries-long trade of slaves through the island. Today, the urban landscape contains a number of iconic structures and a wide variety of vernacular architectural styles, yet because of political and economic vicissitudes over the centuries, Stone Town has undergone both development and retrogression. The main buildings of the town that can to be viewed today were built during the 18th and 19th centuries. The old Arab Fort, the palaces of the sultans, numerous mosques, and elegant mansions with their massive, carved wooden doorways, dominated the town. Over the last hundred years, however, political changes have affected the architectural landscape in critical ways. The partition of Africa in the late 19th century diminished Zanzibar's commercial dominance, causing a decline in wealth and influence, and as a British protectorate, it became subject to colonial ideas of modernization. After a devastating revolution in the 1960s, during which some twelve thousand Arabs and Indians were killed before fleeing the islands, Zanzibar adopted a communist government.
