In the "Introduction; or, How Star Wars Became Our Oldest Cultural Memory" of the first volume of Critique of Fantasy, the gambit of a contest between science fiction and fantasy was already sketched out. J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis aimed to separate the fantasy from the techno-science foregrounded in works by H.G. Wells, for example, and raise the fantasy or fairy-story to the power of an alternate adult literary genre. My study of the contest between the B-genres for ownership of the evolution of the social relation of art out of the condemned site of day dreaming required in the first place a reading apparatus, which the first volume derived from psychoanalytic theories of daydreaming's relationship to conscious thought, the unconscious, and artistic production as well as from their prehistory, the philosophies of dreams, ghosts, willing and wishing.

Architecture And Space Re Imagined written by Richard Bower and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-10 with Science categories.

As with so many facets of contemporary western life, architecture and space are often experienced and understood as a commodity or product. The premise of this book is to offer alternatives to the practices and values of such westernised space and Architecture (with a capital A), by exploring the participatory and grass-roots practices used in alternative development models in the Global South. This process re-contextualises the spaces, values, and relationships produced by such alternative methods of development and social agency. It asks whether such spatial practices provide concrete realisations of some key concepts of Western spatial theory, questioning whether we might challenge the space and architectures of capitalist development by learning from the places and practices of others. Exploring these themes offers a critical examination of alternative development practices methods in the Global South, re-contextualising them as architectural engagements with socio-political space. The comparison of such interdisciplinary contexts and discourses reveals the political, social, and economic resonances inherent between these previously unconnected spatial protagonists. The interdependence of spatial issues of choice, value, and identity are revealed through a comparative study of the discourses of Henri Lefebvre, John Turner, Doreen Massey, and Nabeel Hamdi. These key protagonists offer a critical framework of discourses from which further connections to socio-spatial discourses and concepts are made, including post-marxist theory, orientalism, post-structural pluralism, development anthropology, post-colonial theory, hybridity, difference and subalterneity. By looking to the spaces and practices of alternative development in the Global South this book offers a critical reflection upon the working practices of Westernised architecture and other spatial and political practices. In exploring the methodologies, implications and values of such participatory development practices this book ultimately seeks to articulate the positive potential and political of learning from the difference, multiplicity, and otherness of development practice in order to re-imagine architecture and space. .

Working Across Difference written by Donna Baines and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-01 with Social Science categories.

Social Workers in Australia are increasingly called upon to work across social differences in ways that promote social justice and challenge growing inequity, and anti-oppressive practice has been put at the heart of qualifying programmes. In this exciting new collection, some of Australia's leading social work academics explore working across so-called human differences within the context of contemporary social work. By drawing on the insights and theories of people who have been positioned as 'different', the authors use practice vignettes and original data to provide ways to join theory and practice, with a primary focus on thinking about how to change patterns of social difference. Whether a social work student or an experienced practitioner, Working Across Differences is essential reading for anyone who values anti-oppressive practice and social justice

Climate change is the main challenge facing developed countries in the 21st century. To what extent does this agenda converge with issues of poverty and social exclusion? Climate change and poverty offers a timely new perspective on the ÔecosocialÕ understanding of the causes and symptoms of, and solutions to, poverty and applies this to recent developments across a number of areas, including fuel poverty, food poverty, housing, transport and air pollution. Unlike any other publication, the book therefore establishes a new agenda for both environmental and social policies which has cross-national relevance. It will appeal to students in social policy, public policy, applied social studies and politics and will also be of interest to those studying international development, economics and geography

Best known for her Kate Delafield detective series, Katherine V. Forrest is recognized as one of the preeminent figures in lesbian popular literature. Yet her work has received little scholarly attention. This critical study explores Forrest's entire body of work, including her fiction and (perhaps more importantly) her writing about writing, popular genres and her readers. Her science fiction and romance novels are analyzed, with a focus on the reasons behind their enduring appeal. Her most famous romance, Curious Wine, originally published in 1984, remains in print--a longevity far exceeding the typical romance novel.

Routledge Handbook Of The Climate Change Movement written by Matthias Dietz and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-10 with Business & Economics categories.

This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of the growing transnational climate movement. A dual focus on climate politics and civil society provides a hitherto unavailable broad and systematic analysis of the current global movement, highlighting how its dynamic and diverse character can play an important role in environmental politics and climate protection. The range of contributors, from well-known academics to activist-scholars, look at climate movements in the developed and developing world, north and south, small and large, central and marginal. The movement is examined as a whole and as single actors, thereby capturing its scope, structure, development, activities and influence. The book thoroughly addresses theoretical approaches, from classic social movement theory to the influence of environmental justice frames, and follows this with a systematic focus on regions, specific NGOs and activists, cases and strategies, as well as relations with peripheral groups. In its breadth, balance and depth, this accessible volume offers a fresh and important take on the question of social mobilization around climate change, making it an essential text for advanced undergraduates, postgraduate students and researchers in the social sciences.
