II p. 292, allgemein anerkannt, dafs nämlich 9 durch die verschiedenen Stadien zu ue fortschritt. Die Frage, die hier im einzelnen untersucht werden soll, bezieht sich auf die Qualität des u in diesem Diphthongen. Suchier, l.c., spricht sich nicht weiter darüber aus, aber schon zwei Jahre früher (1876) hatte Koschwitz in seiner Ueberlieferung und Sprache der Chanson de Voyage de Charle magne p. 29 dieselbe kurz zu beantworten gesucht. Auf Grund des Nebeneinanderbestehens von me und oe in jenem Texte kam er zu dem Schlufs, "die Unterscheidung zwischen der Schreibung oe nnd ue ist nicht so zu fassen, als sei es eine abgeschwächte Form für älteres ua. Das Schwanken zwischen 0 und u drückt viel wahrscheinlicher hier wie sonst nur aus, dafs es weder 0 noch 12, sondern gleich (deutschem) u gelautet habe. In demselben Jahre wie Suchier's oben citierter Artikel (1878) erschien Försters bekannte Arbeit über Die Schicksale des lat. 5 im Französischen,1 Rom. Stud. III. P. 174 - 193. Obgleich Förster viele Male Gelegenheit hatte den Diphthongen ue zu schreiben, so spricht er sich doch nie über die Qualität, die er dem u zuschreiben möchte, aus. Da er aber sonst Böhmer's Transscriptionssystem konsequent durch führt, so wird man wohl nicht zu weit gehen, wenn man an nimmt, dafs er ue und nicht z'ie meinte. This volume contains revised and expanded versions of those papers from the 1990 Functional Grammar Conference in Copenhagen that contributed specifically to the current investigation of clause structure in terms of semantic layers. One of the key concepts in this discussion is 'reference'. Some papers discuss ways in which previous accounts of reference need to be expanded and differentiated to provide a consistent picture of referential properties. For many in the Middle Ages, pilgrimages were seen to represent a clear risk of moral and religious perdition for women, and they were strongly discouraged from making them; this exhortation would have been universally disseminated and generally followed, except, of course, in the case of the virtuous ’extraordinary women’, such as saints and queens. Women and Pilgrimage in Medieval Galicia represents an analysis of the social history of women based on documentary sources and physical evidence, breaking away from literary and historiographical stereotypes, while at the same time contributing to a critical assessment of the myth that medieval women were kept hidden away from the world. As the chapters here show, women - and not only those ’extraordinary women’, but also women from other social strata - became pilgrims and travelled the paths that led from their homes to the most important Christian shrines, especially - although not exclusively - Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago de Compostela. It can be seen that medieval women were actively involved in this ritualistic expression of devotion, piety, sacrifice or penitence. This situation is thoroughly documented in this multidisciplinary book, with emphasis both on the pilgrimages abroad from Galicia and on the pilgrimages to the shrine of St James at Compostela.
