This provocative new history of early modern Europe argues that changes in the generation, preservation and circulation of information, chiefly on newly available and affordable paper, constituted an 'information revolution'. In commerce, finance, statecraft, scholarly life, science, and communication, early modern Europeans were compelled to place a new premium on information management. These developments had a profound and transformative impact on European life. The huge expansion in paper records and the accompanying efforts to store, share, organize and taxonomize them are intertwined with many of the essential developments in the early modern period, including the rise of the state, the Print Revolution, the Scientific Revolution, and the Republic of Letters. Engaging with historical questions across many fields of human activity, Paul M. Die Einführung der Papierherstellung gilt als zentrale Voraussetzung für die Durchsetzung des Papiergebrauchs im spätmittelalterlichen Europa. In weiten Teilen unerforscht ist jedoch, wie sich die Papiermacherei etablierte und wie sich die Papiermacher als Vertreter eines neuen Berufs in die Gesellschaft integrierten. Die Studie untersucht daher den Etablierungsprozess dieses neuen Gewerbes am Beispiel des deutschen Südwestens, der früh erste Papiermühlenreviere im Reich nördlich der Alpen ausbildete. Mit technikhistorischen Aspekten befasst sich der erste Teil. Er beleuchtet die Papierherstellung von der materiellen Seite, indem er danach fragt, welche Spuren in historischen Papieren auf den Produktionsprozess verweisen. Im Fokus des zweiten Teils stehen mit den Papiermühlengründungen in Basel vor allem sozial- und wirtschaftsgeschichtliche Aspekte. Die Fallstudie zu Basel ist in eine Gesamtdarstellung der frühen südwestdeutschen Papiermühlenstandorte eingebettet. Mit der systematischen Auswertung der Quellen bereichert der vorliegende Band zum einen die Papiergeschichtsforschung in Hinblick auf die Anfänge der Papierherstellung im deutschen Raum. Er bietet zum anderen das theoretische Rüstzeug für Materialanalysen von Papier.

The untold story of how paper revolutionized art making during the Renaissance, exploring how it shaped broader concepts of authorship, memory, and the transmission of ideas over the course of three centuries In the late medieval and Renaissance period, paper transformed society--not only through its role in the invention of print but also in the way it influenced artistic production. The Art of Paper tells the history of this medium in the context of the artist's workshop from the thirteenth century, when it was imported to Europe from Africa, to the sixteenth century, when European paper was exported to the colonies of New Spain. In this pathbreaking work, Caroline Fowler approaches the topic culturally rather than technically, deftly exploring the way paper shaped concepts of authorship, preservation, and the transmission of ideas during this period. This book both tells a transcultural history of paper from the Cairo Genizah to the Mesoamerican manuscript and examines how paper became "Europeanized" through the various mechanisms of the watermark, colonization, and the philosophy of John Locke. Ultimately, Fowler demonstrates how paper--as refuse and rags transformed into white surface--informed the works for which it was used, as well as artists' thinking more broadly, across the early modern world.

During the Middle Ages, artistic ideas were transmitted from one region to another and passed on from one generation to the next, in the form of drawings. This kind of handmade reproduction, 'exemplum' in Latin, was used to record the form and content of works of art. Some of those drawings have survived in 'model books'. The author presents a fascinating account of many and various aspects of these drawings with special emphasis on how they contribute to our understanding of the genesis of medieval works of art. Exemplum will be a standard work of reference for many years to come
