A poetic classic from a major figure of American Zen. Zen Vows for Daily Life is a collection of gathas, vows in verse form for daily practice, similar to prayers or affirmations for use at home, at work, and in the meditation hall itself. Reciting these poetic vows can help us be fully present in each moment and each activity of our lives. These gathas serve as gentle reminders to return again and again to our highest aspirations, with acceptance, joy, and compassion—for ourselves and all beings. Zen Vows for Daily Life will be a steadfast companion in keeping the reader inspired and committed on their spiritual path. “Each act in a Buddhist monastery—washing up, putting on clothes, entering the Buddha hall, sitting down for meditation, getting up from meditation—receives its own Dharma poem. Events on pilgrimage—encountering a tree, a river, a bridge, a dignitary, a mendicant—likewise offer entries into truth. My purpose in this book is similar: to show how ordinary occurrences in our modern lay lives are in fact the Buddha’s own teachings—and also to show how we can involve ourselves accordingly in the practice of wisdom and compassion with family and friends, with everyone and everything.”—Robert Aitken, from the Preface “In [Zen Vows for Daily Life], poetry and meditation always go together. Poetry is comprised of images and music, and images make the practice easy. Robert Aitken Roshi is a poet who deeply appreciates practicing with these gathas. He offers us many beautiful verses, sterling examples of this practice, that we can use to reflect more deeply on what we are doing. I am grateful to Aitken Roshi for offering us this beautiful book.”—from the Foreword by Thich Nhat Hanh

Winner of the 2016 IPPY Gold Medal Award for Self Help How making a vow—consciously setting an intention—can be a powerful tool for achieving all sort of goals, from the author of the best-selling Mindful Eating. Making a vow is a powerful mindfulness practice—and all you have to do to tap into that power is set your intention consciously. A vow can be as "small" as the aspiration to smile at someone at least once every day, or as "big" as marriage; as personal as deciding to be mindful when picking up the phone or as universal as vowing to save all sentient beings. It can be deeply spiritual, utterly ordinary, or both. Zen teacher Jan Chozen Bays looks to traditional Buddhist teachings to show the power of vows—and then applies that teaching broadly to the many vows we make. She shows that if we work with vows consciously, they set us in the direction of achieving our goals, both temporal and spiritual. Bays presents secular and spiritual wisdom from both East and West, highlighting figures such as Martha Graham, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Buckminster Fuller. She helps us examine the vows we have already made for ourselves and the vows we’ve unconsciously inherited. She supports us in repairing broken vows, crafting new intentions, and exploring what’s truly on our bucket lists.

Written by one of today's most distinguished teachers, this Zen book provides an authoritative introduction to Zen training from the perspective of someone who has gone through it. The author begins by setting out the basic Buddhist teaching based on the example of Buddha and then traces the fundamentals of the Zen way through a detail account of workings of a contemporary Zen monastery. She draws on her own experience of twelve year's study in a Rinzai monastery to present the pattern of its life: the harsh introduction that the novice endures, the daily routine of chanting, work and meditation, the seasonal festivals, retreats and rituals. Through all this, Myokyo-ni shows that the Zen way leads to a genuine insight into the Buddhist teachings and provides what is necessary for the development of such insight to occur. Lastly, she demonstrates that this insight is not merely a mental exercise but a genuine restructuring and making whole.

THIS BOOK WILL HELP YOU• to appreciate the significance of this particular school of Buddhism, famous for its focus on meditation and self-awakening• to understand the history of Zen and the ‘Ways of Zen’• to discover how Zen is a way of life — not a belief system• to avoid faux pas in conversation, in travelling and in personal relationshipsZen (in Chinese, Ch’an) is the form of Buddhism which the great teacher Bodhidharma brought to China from India in the late fifth century. Today it is practised mainly in Japan and Korea,. Based upon the understanding that each of us has the potential for complete awakening, Zen is in fact a coalition of practical ways of stilling the mind in order to attain self-knowledge. Because the realization of the true nature of reality, including one’s own, is not an intellectual pursuit but an experienced truth, Zen teachers transmit the truth (dharma) from mind to mind or heart to heart without the use of words, using different techniques to break through the limitations of the logical mind. This engaging book explains the essence of Zen in simple terms.. It traces its development and looks at its unique methods of teaching, such as meditation, koans — startling paradoxes that stop the intellect — the use of texts, ceremonies, poetry, and the martial arts. It describes life in monasteries and in the everyday world. Because Zen is rooted in Reality, its practitioners often experience a delightful sense of wonder in the commonplace. This democratic and liberating philosophy does not require us to give up our own traditions, but rather helps us to deepen our understanding of them, and continues to inspire growing numbers of followers in the West.ACCESS THE WORLD’S RELIGIONSSimple Guides: Religion is a series of concise, accessible introductions to the world’s major religions. In Everyday Zen, author Stephanie Russell states, "Zen mind sees daily life as the main vehicle for higher awareness." Everyday Zen teaches you how to incorporate the principles of Zen into your daily routine. You must be present in the moment and be willing to accept change and let go of tangible items in order to progress. Russell offers numerous methods of integrating Zen into everyday life:o Self-justification is like pouring a cup of sand into the ocean.o Halfhearted action makes mud of a mountain stream. Walk into your work with everything you have and leave with yet more clarity.o Everyday problems can seem unsolvable. They are not. Walk around the block and take in the world: the topiary, the trees, a paper cup crumpled in the grass. When you return home, your solution will be inside the door.o A triumph occurs alongside a calamity. A person is born and another one dies. You're elated and at the same time you're blue. Don't try to make sense of these things. Step back from the drama and observe life without entanglement.

Women Living Zen written by Paula Kane Robinson Arai and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-08-26 with Religion categories.

In this study, based on both historical evidence and ethnographic data, Paula Arai shows that nuns were central agents in the foundation of Buddhism in Japan in the sixth century. They were active participants in the Soto Zen sect, and have continued to contribute to the advancement of the sect to the present day. Drawing on her fieldwork among the Soto nuns, Arai demonstrates that the lives of many of these women embody classical Buddhist ideals. They have chosen to lead a strictly disciplined monastic life over against successful careers and the unconstrained contemporary secular lifestyle. In this, and other respects, they can be shown to stand in stark contrast to their male counterparts.
