Pada masa kini, mangkin zeolit digunakan secara meluas dalam pelbagai proses kimia, petroleum, petrokimia dan industri bahan kimia khusus. Ia merupakan suatu faktor ekonomi yang amat penting. Sebagai bahan berhablur dan mempunyai liang yang mikro, zeolit mempunyai luas permukaan dan kapasiti penjerapan yang tinggi, serta mempunyai saiz saluran dan rongganya dalam lingkungan bersamaan dengan kebanyakan molekul yang terlibat (0.5 hingga 1.2 nanometer). Struktur saluran zeolit yang istimewa ini yang membenarkan kememilihan bentuk serta keupayaan kehadiran keasidan yang tinggi, menjadikan zeolit suatu mangkin yang menarik dalam pelbagai proses bagi industri kimia. Zeolit telah digunakan sebagai mangkin dalam proses Peretakan Bermangkin Terbendalir (FCC) disebabkan aktiviti intrinsik zeolit yang tinggi serta kememilihan terhadap gasolin dan aktiviti zeolit yang bertahan lama. Semenjak 50 tahun yang lepas, berlaku perkembangan yang ketara dalam sintensis zeolit dengan saiz liang yang berbeza untuk keperluan tindak balas yang melibatkan suatu julat saiz molekul yang luas. Dengan itu, sintesis bagi mangkin yang berliang makro, meso dan mikro telah dapat diperkembangkan. Satu daripada penemuan yang menarik dalam bidang sintesis bahan ini ialah bahan bermeso liang seperti silikat berliang dan ayak molekul aluminosilikat mempunyai saiz liang antara 1.5 hingga 10 nm serta luas permukaan melebihi 700 m2g/gm. Antara bahan-bahan ini, MCM-41 dengan liang bertatasusunan heksagon adalah sangat berpotensi untuk digunakan sebagai mangkin. Liang-liang MCM-41 yang besar berserta tapak asid pada permukaan struktur bermeso liang memungkinkan fungsinya sebagai monoasid dan juga magkin dwifungsi asid/oksida logam. Kemampuan memperkenalkan tapak aktif ke dalam struktur ini mengembangkan aplikasinya sebagai mangkin yang berpotensi dalam pemangkin bersifat asid, alkali dan redoks serta sebagai penyokong bagi fasa aktif.
