In the early 1980s the peace movements in most of the Western countries captured public attention as never before. This largely resulted from NATO’s decision in 1979 to deploy new medium range missiles in Europe in 1983 if negotiations with the Soviet Union to limit this type of weapon system failed. The main purpose of the peace movements in Europe was to put pressure on their respective governments to accept Soviet proposals in negotiations and not to deploy new missiles. Many large demonstrations and other ‘happenings’ were organised for this purpose. The Soviet and other Warsaw Pact countries accompanied and supported the activities of the peace movements by propaganda and disinformation campaigns. The national peace movements, despite their common aims, had different historic backgrounds and characteristics. This book, originally published in 1985, presents an authoritative review of the peace movements in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany and the United States. The authors discuss not only the history and organisation of each peace movement, but also their international cooperation, media coverage and prospects for the future.

De westerse grootlandbouwondernemingen die aan het eind van de vorige eeuw in Sumatra's Oostkust ontstonden werden gekenmerkt door de inzet op grote schaal van Chinese en Javaanse contractkoelies, die als dwangarbeiders vastzaten aan hun plantages. De advocaat Van den Brand vestigde in een geruchtmakende brochure die in 1902 verscheen--in dit boek in facsimile opgenomen--de aandacht op de wrede behandeling waaraan zij blootstonden. Onder politieke druk liet minister van koloniën Idenburg een onderzoek instellen. De rapportage hierover--in zijn geheel opgenomen--bevestigde de misstanden. De minister hield het rapport geheim. Tegen de ergste uitwassen werden maatregelen genomen. Het nauwe samenspel van koloniale bestuurders en kapitalistische ondernemers, zo kenmerkend voor de toenmalige koloniale ontwikkelingspolitiek, ook elders in koloniaal Azië, bleef ook daarna in stand. De auteur beschrijft en verklaart het ontstaan van de plantagesamenleving en daarna, geïllustreerd met vele voorbeelden, de barre omstandigheden waaronder de contractkoelies moesten werken en leven. Tot slot worden de reacties in publieke opinie, parlement en overheid op Van den Brands aanklacht samengevat. De verschijning van dit boek in 1987 trok grote aandacht en leidde tot een felle polemiek over de aard van het Nederlandse koloniale bestuur. In deze derde druk wordt in een nieuw voorwoord uitgebreid ingegaan op die discussie. In de tekst zijn een groot aantal nieuwe bronnen en gegevens verwerkt. Daardoor kan deze studie met nog meer recht gelden als standaardwerk over dit onderwerp.

Het Buginees—met een geschat aantal sprekers van tweeëneenhalf miljoen de grootste taal van Zuid-Sulawesi—kent een eeuwenlange schriftelijke overleving. Daaronder bevinden zich belangwekkende producten van historiografische en letterkundige aard. Hoe erkend belangrijk deze ook zijn, wetenschappelijke verantwoorde edities van dergelijke teksten zijn schaars, een omstandigheid die voor een groot deel kan worden verlaard door de aard van het Buginese schrift dat vatbaar is voor meerdere uitleg. In de hier uitgegeven tekst zijn op geraffineerde wijze literaire en historische elementen met elkaar vervlochten. In de vorm van een heldendicht, toloq, wordt het verhaal verteld van Arung Labuaja, een op Zuid-Sulawesi nog steeds roemrucht hoofd met grote militair-tactische talenten. Ruime plaats is in het gedicht toegekend aan de gebeurtenissen tijdens de door het Nederlands-Indische leger uitgevoerde Vierde Boné-expeditie van 1905, waarna het Bonése vorstenbestuur ophield te functioneren en werd vervangen door het Nederlands gezag. Met Arung Labuaja als middelpunt van het verhaal, vervult de tekst—gehuld in poëtisch gewaad—de hoofdzakelijke Nederlandse bronnen over de periode op verscheidene punten aan. De hier gepresenteerde uitgave van de Toloqna Arung Labuaja beoogt aan zijn literaire, geschiedkundige en teksthistorische aspecten recht te doen, in de overtuiging dat een teksteditie meer behoort te zijn dan transcriptie en vertaling: verheldering en verklaring van de tekst dient altijd voorop te staan.
