De Zhuang Zi (spreek uit: Dzwángdzu) is een van de meesterwerken uit de wereldliteratuur. Het werk ontleent zijn naam aan Zhuang Zi (Meester Zhuang de Volkomene), die in de vierde eeuw voor onze jaartelling geleefd moet hebben. Als een van de grondleggende teksten van het taoïsme heeft de Zhuang Zi een grote invloed uitgeoefend op de mystiek en de kunst van het Verre Oosten. Ondanks zijn meer dan tweeduizendjarige ouderdom is de Zhuang Zi nog steeds een van de meest geliefde boeken in China en Japan, een werk vol wijsheid en humor, vol ironie over onze menselijke kennis en wetenschap, en vol kritiek op de schijnheiligheid van zedenmeesters. De Zhuang Zi bestaat uit drie delen, die de innerlijke, de uiterlijke en de gemengde geschriften worden genoemd. De innerlijke geschriften zijn de oudste en worden aan Zhuang Zi zelf toegeschreven. De twee andere delen zijn het werk van zijn navolgers uit de derde eeuw voor onze jaartelling. Toch vormen de verschillende geschriften een aansluitend geheel waarin de steeds vernieuwende gedachtewereld van het taoïsme in zijn volle diepgang tot uitdrukking komt. '

In recent decades, a growing concern in studies in Chinese intellectual history is that Chinese classics have been forced into systems of classification prevalent in Western philosophy and thus imperceptibly transformed into examples that echo Western philosophy. Lin Ma and Jaap van Brakel offer a methodology to counter this approach, and illustrate their method by carrying out a transcultural inquiry into the complexities involved in understanding shi and fei and their cognate phrases in the Warring States texts, the Zhuangzi in particular. The authors discuss important features of Zhuangzi's stance with regard to language-meaning, knowledge-doubt, questioning, equalizing, and his well-known deconstruction of the discourse in ancient China on shifei. Ma and van Brakel suggest that shi and fei apply to both descriptive and prescriptive languages and do not presuppose any fact/value dichotomy, and thus cannot be translated as either true/false or right/wrong. Instead, shi and fei can be grasped in terms of a pre-philosophical notion of fitting. Ma and van Brakel also highlight Zhuangzi's idea of "walking-two-roads" as the most significant component of his stance. In addition, they argue that all of Zhuangzi's positive recommendations are presented in a language whose meaning is not fixed and that every stance he is committed to remains subject to fundamental questioning as a way of life.

Confucius (551-479 v.Chr.) is naast Lao Zi (604-507 v.Chr.?) de beroemdste filosoof van China. Hij is de grondlegger van de humanistische levensbeschouwing die dit land door de eeuwen heen heeft gekenmerkt. De gesprekken (Lunyu) zijn niet alleen de fundamentele, maar ook de meest toegankelijke bron van zijn denken. Confucianisme en taoïsme zijn tegengesteld maar vullen elkaar ook aan. In de geschriften van Lao Zi en Zhuang Zi is er een voortdurende dialoog gaande met Confucius en zijn school. Beide denkrichtingen zijn bepalend voor de Chinese cultuur in het algemeen. Daarbij komt dat het confucianisme opnieuw zeer actueel is geworden. Gedurende de grote omwentelingen van de twintigste eeuw is weliswaar herhaaldelijk getracht aan deze levensbeschouwing een einde te maken en haar zelfs uit te roeien, maar dat bleek onmogelijk te zijn. Zij is veel te diep in de Chinese beschaving geworteld om zomaar te worden tenietgedaan. Sinds een aantal jaren wordt Confucius en zijn school overal weer in ere hersteld en heroveren zij geleidelijk aan de belangrijke positie van weleer. Voor wie de huidige ontwikkelingen in China wil begrijpen, is vertrouwdheid met deze grote culturele traditie een vereiste. Vandaar de noodzaak om nu De gesprekken van Confucius toegankelijk te maken. Kristofer Schipper geeft hier de eerste volledige, rechtstreeks uit het klassiek Chinees gemaakte, Nederlandse vertaling van dit werk en voorziet het van een op de oude exegetische literatuur berustende toelichting. Een vertaling van de nauw met De gesprekken verbonden biografie van Confucius door China s grootste historicus, Sima Qian (ca. 145-87 v.Chr.), is eveneens toegevoegd.
