he objective of the project was to transform this large mono-functional housing estate into a sustainable, functionally diverse and socially blended urban district with innovative and sustainably organized technical infrastructure systems. The project brought together urban designers, landscape architects and architects as well as specialists in urban water management and energy. While the urban designers focused on differentiation and diversity, on the integration of workplaces and communicative uses, on problems of cautious densification and on a redefinition of public spaces, the architects were concerned with reconstruction measures and potential new uses, well-defined intervention in the existing stock of concrete-slab prefabricated housing, transformation of environment, integration of new housing types in existing construction as well as new construction. The landscape architecture is creating functional open spaces differing in their character and atmosphere, while urban water management and energy specialists, on the other hand, sought to develop concepts of responsible use of resources. The chapter on energy technology presents decentralized solar hot water heating systems, heat recovery from wastewater, radiant heating and controlled ventilation, and shows that CO2-free heating is possible in large housing estates. As for urban water management, its aims are water conservation, water, nutrient and energy recycling and preservation of local water resources. The project presents solutions for dealing with rainwater, grey and black water, for instance an area-integrated black water system, which is able to recycle energy and nutrients. The particular quality of this project consists in the synthesis of the research results of all involved disciplines. The authors build up an example setting for the transformation of a monofunctional dormitory town district into sustainable mixed district. Beteiligte Disziplinen sind: Städtebau, Landschaftsarchitektur und Architektur sowie Siedlungswasserwirtschaft und Energie. Während es im Städtebau um Differenzierung und Vielfalt, Integration von kommunikativen Nutzungen und Arbeitsplätzen, um Fragen einer behutsamen Verdichtung sowie der Neudefinition öffentlicher Räume geht, befasst sich die Fachsparte Architektur mit Möglichkeiten von Umnutzung und Umbau, gezielter Eingriffe in das Plattenbausystem, der Umgestaltung ihres Umfeldes, der Integration neuer Wohnformen im Bestand wie durch Neubauten. Die Landschaftsarchitektur übernimmt die Entwicklung leistungsfähiger Freiräume unterschiedlicher Charaktere und Atmosphären, während die Disziplinen Siedlungswasserwirtschaft und Energie Konzepte eines verantwortungsvollen Umgangs mit den Ressourcen einbringen. Das Kapitel Energietechnik stellt dezentrale Systeme zur solaren Heizwärmeversorgung, Abwasserwärmerückgewinnung, Flächenheizung und kontrollierter Wohnraumlüftung vor und zeigt, dass die CO2-freie Wärmeversorgung von Großsiedlungen möglich ist. Die Ziele der Siedlungswasserwirtschaft: Wassersparen, Wasser-, Nährstoff- und Energierecycling sowie Erhaltung des lokalen Wasserhaushaltes. Fresh fish and fresh vegetables harvested directly from the roof, produced with treated wastewater from the building, that is the vision of ROOF WATER-FARM (RWF 2013-2017). Water-Farm technologies such as aquaponics and hydroponics as resource- and space-sensitive farming systems are at the focus of urban and infrastructural transformation processes towards the loop city. The project, funded by the German Ministry of education and research (BMBF) from 2013–2017, first-time investigates the link of these light-weight farm systems with technologies and modules of building-integrated water recycling. Besides the theoretical reflection of rainwater use, the hygienically-safe treatment and use of greywater (kitchen, bathroom) as service water for the production of fish and edible plants is investigated and tested on a practical level. In addition to, the project first time tested the production of an urban liquid fertilizer („goldwater“) out of blackwater (toilet) for an resource saving urban food production. Based on and via an upscaling process building studies and building passports are developed for conventional typologies such as residential buildings, educational buildings, hotels or commercial buildings. Networking maps envision the loop-oriented city transformation exemplary for distinct Berlin neighbourhoods from the inner-city, via the periphery to areas of transformation. The interdisciplinary handbook presents the main results of practical and planning-design work at the scales of technology, building, neighbourhood, and city as well as from the perspective of RWF actors and users. Literally „from the screw to the city scale“ it shows technological and urban design strategies linking decentralized wastewater and food production as multifunctional infrastructure of the loop city. A Toolbox offers additional materials and examples focussing topics such as operation & maintenance, feasibility or life-cycle assessment, upscaling and transferibility of the modular ROOF WATER-FARM approach. ROOF WATER-FARM communicates future city and infrastructure development to a broad audience suitable for daily-use. Complementary to the technologie showcase at the ROOF WATER-FARM pilot plant in Berlin-Kreuzberg, the handbook serves as inspiration and tool for the sustainable urban transformation facing urban water, food, multifunctional infrastructure and the loop city. Frischer Fisch und frisches Gemüse direkt vom Dach, produziert mit aufbereitetem Wasser aus dem Gebäude, das ist die Vision von ROOF WATER-FARM (RWF 2013–2017). Water-Farm Technologien wie Aquaponik und Hydroponik stehen als ressourcen- und flächenschonende Farmsysteme im Blickpunkt städtebaulicher und infrastruktureller Transformationsprozesse hin zur Kreislaufstadt. Das vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung im Zeitraum 2013–2017 geförderte Verbundprojekt untersucht dabei erstmalig die Verbindung dieser gebäudeintegrierbaren Leichtbau-Farmsysteme mit Technologien und Modulen gebäudeintegrierbaren (Ab-)Wasserrecyclings. Neben der theoretischen Betrachtung von Regenwasser wird die hygienisch-sichere Aufbereitung und Nutzung von Grauwasser (Küche, Bad) als Betriebswasser für die Produktion von Fisch und essbaren Pflanzen praktisch untersucht und getestet. Zudem erprobt das Projekt erstmalig die Herstellung eines urbanen Flüssigdüngers („Goldwasser“) aus Schwarzwasser (Toilette) für die ressourcenschonende städtische Nahrungsmittelproduktion. Darauf aufbauend und über ein Upscaling werden Gebäudestudien und Gebäudepässe für gängige Typologien wie Wohnungsbauten, Bildungsbauten, Hotel oder Gewerbebauten entworfen. Anhand von Netzwerkplänen wird zudem für ausgewählte Berliner Quartiere von der Innenstadt, über den Stadtrand bis hin zu Transformationsräumen beispielhaft ein kreislauforientierter Stadtumbau visioniert. Das interdisziplinäre Handbuch präsentiert die wesentlichen Ergebnisse praktischer und planerisch-entwerferischer Arbeit auf den Maßstabsebenen Technologie, Gebäude, Quartier, Gesamtstadt sowie aus dem Blickwinkel der Akteure und Nutzer. „Von der Schraube zur Gesamtstadt“ zeigt es technologische und städtebauliche Strategien der Verbindung dezentraler Abwasseraufbereitung und Nahrungsmittelproduktion als multifunktionale Infrastruktur der Kreislaufstadt. Eine Toolbox bietet ergänzende Materialien und Beispiele zu den Themen Betrieb & Wartung, Wirtschaftlichkeit, Ökobilanz, Upscaling und Übertragbarkeit des modularen ROOF WATER-FARM Ansatzes. ROOF WATER-FARM kommuniziert künftige Stadt- und Infrastrukturentwicklung zielgruppenübergreifend und alltagstauglich. Ergänzend zur Demonstration der Technologie an der ROOF WATER-FARM Pilotanlage in Berlin-Kreuzberg dient das Handbuch als Inspiration und Werkzeug für den nachhaltigen Stadtumbau im Kontext von Wasser, Nahrung, multifunktionaler Infrastruktur und Kreislaufstadt.
