Die Individualpsychologie Alfred Adlers ist eine der drei klassischen tiefenpsychologischen Schulen. Im Zentrum ihrer Theorie stehen Fragen des Selbstwertes, indem die Aufmerksamkeit auf das Minderwertigkeitsgefühl als Grundbefindlichkeit der kindlichen Seele gelenkt wird, das durch das Streben nach sozialer Gleichwertigkeit, nach Geltung und Macht kompensiert wird. Dabei stellt Adlers Theorie eine bemerkenswerte Mischung aus egalitär-aufklärerischem und psychoanalytischem Denken dar und ist im Gegensatz zu den Lehren Sigmund Freuds und Carl Gustav Jungs eher konstruktivistisch orientiert. Dennoch wurde der Individualpsychologie bisher vonseiten der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit zuteil. Der vorliegende Sammelband möchte daher den potentiellen Ertrag der Adler'schen Lehre sowohl für die Erzählforschung als auch für die Literaturwissenschaft deutlich machen und darlegen, dass sie durch das Einbringen einer zusätzlichen Perspektive eine Bereicherung für die Textinterpretation darstellt, der bisher zu wenig Beachtung zuteilwurde.

Diese Festschrift würdigt das vielfältige wissenschaftliche Lebenswerk von Bernd Rieken. Er hat sich an der Universität Wien für Europäische Ethnologie (Volkskunde) habilitiert und wurde kurze Zeit später an die Sigmund-Freud-Privatuniversität Wien berufen, wo er von 2007 bis 2023 den weltweit ersten und bisher einzigen Doktorats-Studiengang für Psychotherapiewissenschaft leitete. Er hat in dem Bereich einschlägige Beiträge verfasst und die Buchreihe Psychotherapiewissenschaft in Forschung, Profession und Kultur ins Leben gerufen, in der auch diese Festschrift erscheint. Sein besonderes theoretisches und praktisches Interesse gilt der traditionsreichen Psychotherapieschule der analytischen Individualpsychologie. Vorwiegend bewegt er sich im Grenzbereich zwischen Psyche und Kultur und bemüht sich um eine Berücksichtigung sowohl ethnologischer als auch tiefenpsychologischer Aspekte insbesondere im Bereich der volkskundlichen Erzählforschung und der ethnologischen Katastrophenforschung. In diesem Kontext hat er sich mit seinen Studien zu Sturmflut- und Lawinenkatastrophen einen Namen gemacht. Inaugurated in 1984, America's "War on Drugs" is just the most recent skirmish in a standoff between global drug trafficking and state power. From Britain's nineteenth-century Opium Wars in China to the activities of Colombia's drug cartels and their suppression by U.S.-backed military forces today, conflicts over narcotics have justified imperial expansion, global capitalism, and state violence, even as they have also fueled the movement of goods and labor around the world. In Drug Wars, cultural critic Curtis Marez examines two hundred years of writings, graphic works, films, and music that both demonize and celebrate the commerce in cocaine, marijuana, and opium, providing a bold interdisciplinary exploration of drugs in the popular imagination. Ranging from the writings of Sigmund Freud to pro-drug lord Mexican popular music, gangsta rap, and Brian De Palma's 1983 epic Scarface, Drug Wars moves from the representations and realities of the Opium Wars to the long history of drug and immigration enforcement on the U.S.-Mexican border, and to cocaine use and interdiction in South America, Middle Europe, and among American Indians. Throughout Marez juxtaposes official drug policy and propaganda with subversive images that challenge and sometimes even taunt government and legal efforts. As Marez shows, despite the state's best efforts to use the media to obscure the hypocrisies and failures of its drug policies-be they lurid descriptions of Chinese opium dens in the English popular press or Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign-marginalized groups have consistently opposed the expansion of state power that drug traffic has historically supported. On the one hand, he is notorious for shooting and producing his films quickly, cheaply and with blatant disregard for safety measures, which, together with his ability to issue a dozen new films every year and his impressive filmography, have earned him the titles of "shlockmeister" and "the King of the B's" among film journalists. On the other hand, he became the youngest American director to be given a film retrospective at the prestigious Cin�mat�que Fran�aise in Paris, one of his directorial efforts - House of Usher - was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded him with an Academy Honorary Award "for his rich engendering of films and filmmakers."This book investigates this duality and explores whether Corman is indeed a shlockmeister or an artist whose works are worthy of the highest cinema awards. Though drug use was widespread in the nineteenth century, the negative influence of narcotics was mostly unknown. Cinema of the early twentieth century was instrumental in making viewers aware of the harmful effects of drugs. Throughout the decades, images of drugs such as marijuana, LSD, and heroin in films impacted—both negatively and positively—the national perception of their use. In fact, the use, popularity, and opinion of certain drugs often follow their status on the big screen. In Hooked in Film, John Markerttakes a close look at the correlation between social policies and the public view of drugs and their portrayals in film. In this volume, Markert examines the changing social attitudes toward illegal drugs and their cinematic depictions from as early as the 1894 film Chinese Opium Den to the present. The first section of this book focuses on the demonization of drugs between 1900 and 1959, followed by an assessment of marijuana on the big screen after 1960, when the drug was shown as part of everyday life with no serious consequences. Post-1960 depictions of heroin use, which have remained consistently negative, are also analyzed. Markert then takes a close look at the portrayals of powdered cocaine after the 1960s and the emergence of crack in the mid-1980s. Finally, Markert discusses hallucinogens, Ecstasy, and methamphetamines and their roles on the big screen.
