In Amoris laetitia hat Papst Franziskus viele weiterführende Wege aufgezeigt, wie die Herausforderungen für Ehe und Familie in der heutigen Zeit gemeistert werden können. Der vorliegende Band reflektiert unterschiedliche Aspekte dieses nachsynodalen Schreibens in breiter theologischer, pastoraler, spiritueller und gesellschaftspolitischer Perspektive. Walter Kardinal Kasper hat auf Einladung von Papst Franziskus zum Auftakt der beiden Familiensynoden 2014 und 2015 vor dem Konsistorium der Kardinäle einen vielbeachteten Vortrag über "Das Evangelium von der Familie" gehalten. Seine Gedanken haben die Diskussion in der letzten Zeit maßgeblich mitbestimmt. Aus diesem Grund ist dieser thematische Band über Amoris laetitia Kardinal Walter Kasper zu seinem 85. Geburtstag gewidmet. Walter Kasper war 1964 –1970 Professor für Dogmatik in Münster, anschließend 1970 –1989 Professor für Dogmatik in Tübingen. Im Jahr 1989 wurde er zum Bischof geweiht, bis 1999 war er Bischof der Diözese Rottenburg-Stuttgart. Kasper wurde 1999 nach Rom berufen und war bis 2010 Präsident des Päpstlichen Rates zur Förderung der Einheit der Christen. Im Jahr 2001 erfolgte die Erhebung zum Kardinal. Diese ihm zu seinem 85. One may argue that the Second Vatican Council simply came too early to address the questions that swept over Christianity and Catholicism with the sexual revolution. There is little doubt, however, that although the popes in the post-conciliar era made marriage and family issues a matter of decision at the highest level, they did not succeed in thwarting the growing discrepancy between the church's moral teaching in these matters and the moral insights of a large portion of the Catholic faithful. The two Synods of Bishops, which Pope Francis called in 2014 and 2015, can be regarded as a new attempt of the magisterium to come to terms with the problems that appeared on the horizon in the 1960's. The present volume addresses some of the major theological and ethical questions at stake and provides perspectives and resources for a renewed discourse of the church on marriage and family. This well-researched book explains why the Catholic Church continues to teach marital indissolubility and addresses the numerous contemporary challenges to that teaching. It surveys the patristic witness to marital indissolubility, along with Orthodox and Protestant views, as well as historical-critical biblical exegesis on the contested biblical passages. It also surveys the Catholic tradition from the Trent through Benedict XVI, and it examines a Catholic argument that the Catholic Church's teaching can and should change. Then it explores Amoris Laetitia, the papal exhortation from Pope Francis on marriage, and the various major responses to it, with the issue of marital indissolubility at the forefront. Finally, it retrieves Aquinas's theology of marital indissolubility as a contribution to deepening current theological discussions. The author argues that Amoris Laetitia upholds the traditional Catholic teaching that a valid and consummated Christian marriage is absolutely indissoluble, in accord with the teachings of Jesus and the Apostle Paul, as solemnly and authoritatively taught by the Council of Trent and affirmed by later popes and the Second Vatican Council. He says that Amoris Laetitia should be interpreted and implemented in light of the doctrine of marital indissolubility: implementations that undermine this doctrine should be avoided. Levering says that numerous contemporary Catholic theologians and biblical scholars are mistakenly turning the indissolubility of marriage into contingent dissolubility based upon whether the spouses continue to act in loving ways toward each other. The sacrament's gift of objective indissolubility is thereby undermined. Fortunately, the main interpreters of Amoris Laetitia, whose views have been approved by Pope Francis, insist that the Apostolic Exhortation does not change the doctrine of marital indissolubility in any way.

Die anhaltende Krise des Glaubens macht vor dem Sakrament der Ehe nicht halt. Dass sakramentale Ehen dennoch ohne bewusste Intention und sogar ohne liturgischen Kontext zustande kommen können, gibt theologisch zu denken; ebenso die pastorale Not derer, deren sakramentale Ehe gescheitert ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund geht die vorliegende Studie der Frage nach, was das Ehesakrament in systematischer Hinsicht ausmacht. Näherhin sucht sie diese Einsichten mit den Elementen zu konfrontieren, die eine Ehe konkret, also rechtlich und liturgisch konstituieren. Dabei werden Spannungen ansichtig, welche ausführlich und gründlich sakramententheologisch erörtert werden. Auf der Basis dieser Diskussion wird schließlich ein eigener ehetheologischer Ansatz entwickelt, der eine Modifikation der konstitutiven Elemente anregt. Diese Modifikation würde es ermöglichen, die bestehenden Spannungen zu überwinden und neue pastorale Perspektiven aufzuzeigen.
