Zvi Helmut Steinitz Memoirs for eternal remembrance For years I was preoccupied with the thought of documenting the tragic fate of my family members, all of them perished in the Holocaust. Yet for almost my whole life, I tried to suppress the sorrowful past, wary of resurrecting the years of tears and suffering. I rarely spoke of the wartime atrocities. I never returned to the country where death resided, where streams of Jewish blood saturated the earth. I couldn ́t bring myself to stand before the silent mass grave in Belzec, where my parents, my brother and my aunt lie buried together with hundreds upon thousands of Jewish victims. I couldn ́t face the death of those I loved, couldn't look into their eyes. In my mind, they live on. Many years later, vivid images from the monstrous war years began to appear frequently, images that cast a shadow over my day-to-day life and burdened my mind. I gradually became aware of my age, too. I was no longer young, and already I felt under pressure to finally write down the story of my family. All my life I had been haunted by the question of how I had survived the war, where I had drawn the mental and physical strength that helped me to survive those tortuous years. There is no explanation for my survival, and yet I am certain that the upbringing that my parents gave me had a significant influence on my steadfastness and determination, particularly in critical situations. My parents brought my brother and me up with love and human values that I have carried with me through my life. In moments of deepest despair and deadly peril, hidden strengths awakened in me, strengths that sharpened my senses and saved my life. I strongly believe that the values installed in childhood will always stay with a person and develop into principles that a young person can take into independent life. Had I not possessed these principles, not even blind luck or sheer coincidence could have saved me. As the only surviving member of my family, I felt a moral obligation to immortalise in writing the fate of my family and their lives before and during the war up until their tragic deaths. I had the extraordinary fortune of surviving, and I have enough mental strength today to enable me to address the horrors of that time and to tell the story of my family. The Nazis will not succeed in their appalling attempt at erasing my family's existence from this earth. My parents and brother have no personal graves and no gravestone.

Erinnern für die Zukunft aus jüdischer Sicht (1996/2003) Erinnern für die Zukunft: Das Erinnern sei gewissermaßen die jüdischste aller Beschäftigungen, fand Ruth Klüger: "Unsere Religion ist in allen Einzelheiten an unser Geschichtsbewusstsein gebunden, und es ist diese kollektive Erinnerung, die uns überhaupt zu Juden macht." (R. Klüger 1995, Literatur hier S. 23 f.) Dieses Erinnern tue weh, meinte am 27. Januar 1998 Präsidentin Rita Süssmuth anlässlich des neuen deutschen Gedenktages für die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus im Bundestag zu Bonn: "Es löst Entsetzen aus und lässt zugleich verstummen und aufschreien. Sich den bedrückendsten Wahrheiten unserer Geschichte zu stellen, ist aber unverzichtbar. Dazu verpflichten uns die Opfer, ihre Angehörigen und Nachkommen. Aber es ist auch für uns selbst notwendig, für den unauflöslichen Zusammenhang von Erinnerungs- und Zukunftsfähigkeit", so die deutsche Bundestagspräsidentin, und weiter: "Erinnerung ist anstrengend, aber sie befreit auch. Sie gibt uns Kraft, die Zukunft zu bestehen. Ein Volk das innehält, das sich bewusst seiner Vergangenheit stellt, beugt nationalem Wahn und Selbstüberschätzung vor." (R. Süssmuth 1998) - Aus jüdischer Sicht: "Von Zorn und Trauer erfüllt", schrieb der israelische Staatspräsident Ezer Weizman Anfang des Jahres 1996 ins Gästebuch des ehemaligen Konzentrationslagers Sachsenhausen: "Es wird nichts vergessen. Und wir vergessen nicht." Starke Worte, die wohl einmal mehr so gesagt werden mussten, und der deutsche Bundespräsident Roman Herzog meinte damals, beim Besuch in Sachsenhausen sei deutlich geworden, "wie gegenwärtig die Vergangenheit ist, wie kurz 50 Jahre sind." Noch immer gilt wohl das Wort des Propheten Jesaja: "Tröstet, ja tröstet mein Volk!" (40,1-2)

Zwischen Anfang der 1860er Jahre bis in die 1920er Jahre entwickelte sich das jüdische Leben in Baden rasant, wobei das Landjudentum eine eigene Rolle spielte: Juden durften zum Beispiel seit Anfang bzw. Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts in der Nähe der Stadt Konstanz ansässig werden, nämlich auf der Höri am Hochrhein, in Gailingen, Randegg, Wangen und Worblingen, zunächst als Kaufleute, später als Bauern, wo sie gegen beträchtliche "Schutzgelder" ihre sogenannten "Schutzbriefe" erwerben und damit halbwegs abgesichert auskommen konnten. Im Jahre 1825 lebten im "Judendorf" Gailingen immerhin 48% Juden, 50 Jahre später waren es knapp 70%, und von 1870 bis 1884 amtierte sogar ein gewählter jüdischer Bürgermeister, Leopold Guggenheim, in diesem südbadischen, deutsch-jüdischen "Schtetl", dessen einstiges jüdisches Leben heute kondensiert im Jüdischen Museum Gailingen zu besichtigen ist. Die hier gesammelten 32 Beiträge von 21 Autorinnen und Autoren über Jüdische Schicksale in und aus Baden und die Publikationen, auf die sie verweisen, können zwar nicht repräsentativ sein, zeigen aber doch typisches Leben und Leiden in diesem Land. Baden in der Edition Schoáh & Judaica enthält weitere Publikationen, die hier nicht berücksichtigt sind.

Die oft unzulängliche juristische Aufarbeitung des Unrechts und die zur Farce geratenen Entnazifizierungsverfahren im Nachkriegsdeutschland sind ein weiteres Thema dieses Buches. Schlussstrich! Vergessen! Nicht wieder aufrühren! Doch ist das eine Lösung? Nur lebendige Erinnerung schützt vor Wiederholung!
