Although baptized as a child and serving faithfully as a pastor and theologian in the German Evangelische Kirche, Paul Leo was persecuted, removed from his church position, and imprisoned by the Nazi regime due to his Jewish ancestry. Leo was a descendent of Moses Mendelssohn, the famous Jewish philosopher, and Fanny Hensel née Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, the composer and pianist. The book carefully documents how the Nazis took severe measures against Leo, a Christian minister, because of his Jewish lineage. This eventuated in his incarceration in Buchenwald concentration camp before he was able to flee Germany as an exile to the United States. His escape from Germany was mediated through a refugee camp in the Netherlands and emigration to the US through the sponsorship of his colleague and friend Otto Piper, on the faculty of Princeton Theological Seminary. The story of Paul Leo in America includes his teaching at Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, pastorates in southern Texas, and professorship at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. This book highlights the teaching and scholarly publications by Leo and his marriage to the accomplished artist Eva (Dittrich) Leo.

Im Jahr 1937 erhöhten die nationalsozialistischen Machthaber massiv den Druck auf die Kirchen. Auf evangelischer Seite war davon vor allem die Bekennende Kirche betroffen: Während der bruderrätlich organisierte »radikale« Flügel durch polizeiliche Maßnahmen ausgeschaltet werden sollte, bemühte sich das Reichskirchenministerium, den bischöflich geleiteten »gemäßigten« Flügel auf dem Verordnungsweg kaltzustellen. Zugleich wurde deutlich, dass in Staat und Partei zunehmend die Kräfte an Einfluss gewannen, die Christentum und Nationalsozialismus für unvereinbar hielten und die Vernichtung von Christentum und Kirche in Deutschland planten. Dass diese Kräfte sich nicht durchsetzen konnten, war letztlich nur der zögerlichen Haltung Hitlers geschuldet. Die weithin wörtlichen Aufzeichnungen und Mitschriften des bayerischen Landesbischofs Hans Meiser aus dem Zeitraum von Februar bis Dezember 1937 geben einen authentischen Einblick in die unter dem staatlichen Druck stehenden Diskussionen und Entscheidungen der bedeutendsten Leitungsgremien des bischöflichen Flügels, vor allem aber in die Bemühungen, in der gespaltenen Bekennenden Kirche wieder zu einem gemeinsamen Handeln zu kommen. In the correspondence between Rudolf Bultmann and his student Gunther Bornkamm, the two discuss central issues of New Testament studies which have not lost any of their significance. From the beginning, both correspondents belonged to the Confessing Church and were consistent advocates of freedom in theology and the church. Für die Architekten Hopp und Jäger spielte die fotografische Dokumentation ihrer Projekte eine bedeutende Rolle: professioneller Fotografen-Bilder kamen dem Kunden entgegen, sein Bauwerk im vorteilhaften Licht darzustellen zu können. Für H&J hatten die Sammlungen von Abzügen in ca. 40 x 40 cm großen Fotoalben, wie sie meist für die Bauträger als Abschluss-Geschenk vorbereitet und als Doppel im Büro aufbewahrt wurden, auch Werbewirksamkeit gegenüber Neukunden. Diese konnten sich 'ein Bild' machen über das Werk der Architekten und daran eigene Vorstellungen entwickeln. Wenn auch diese Alben weitgehend nicht mehr erhalten sind, so sind es doch ein Großteil der Negative, von denen die Fotoabzüge herrührten. Der Projektbericht Nr. 2 nutzt die in den ersten zwei Jahren wieder zusammengetragenen Fotodokumente, um möglichst alle bekannten Kirchbauten und Renovierungen auch optisch vorzustellen. In Bericht 1 noch nicht vermerkte Baumaßnahmen sind jetzt als Ergänzung der Werkliste zugefügt, so dass das Oevre von nunmehr fast 80 Projekten präsentiert werden kann.
