Die erste Fassung der vorliegenden Schrift - die unter dem Titel "Bildungs funktion des Physikunterrichts" erschien - entstand im Jahre 1958 und setzte sich mit der durch das Preisausschreiben des Deutschen Vereins zur Förderung des mathematischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Unterrichts ge stellten Frage auseinander, wie das Stoffproblem in der Physik angesichts des ständig anwachsenden Stoffes in der Wissenschaft zu lösen sei und nach welchen Prinzipien die Stoffauswahl getroffen werden solle. Seit Veröffentlichung dieser Schrift hat sich mancherlei ereignet, was zur Be antwortung der gestellten Frage beigetragen hat. Von der Konferenz der Kultusminister wurde im Jahre 1960 die Saarbrücken er Rahmenvereinbarung beschlossen, die im darauffolgenden Jahre durch Empfehlungen ergänzt wurde. Der "Deutsche Ausschuß für das Erziehungs-und Bildungswesen" gab eine Reihe von Empfehlungen und Gutachten heraus. Die "Reform vorschläge für die Höhere Schule", die das "Deutsche Institut für Bildung und Wissen" ausarbeitete, behandelten auch die Naturwissenschaften. Auf zwei Tagungen der Fachleiter für Physik in den Jahren 1959 und 1963 befaßte man sich eingehend mit dem Stoffproblem und den Bildungsaufgaben des Physikunterrichts. Wilhelm Flitner veröffentlichte im Jahre 1960 sein Buch "Hochschulreife und Gymnasium" [1], in dem er auch besonders auf die Naturwissenschaften eingeht. Im Jahre 1962 erschien die "Methodik des Physikalischen Unterrichts" von Hahn-Töpfer in 3. Auflage [2] und im gleichen Jahre "Die Pädagogische Dimension der Physik" von Martin Wagenschein [3].
