Die Bedeutung der Psychoanalyse für das Verständnis unserer gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit wurde von Erich Fromm in den Jahren um 1930 vor allem für die Bereiche Religion, Gesellschaft und Strafjustiz reflektiert. Die Anwendung psychoanalytischer Erkenntnisse für den Bereich der Strafjustiz hat Fromm nicht sehr lange beschäftigt, dafür jedoch umso intensiver. Der ideenreichste Beitrag ist sicher "Zur Psychologie des Verbrechers und der strafenden Gesellschaft" aus dem Jahr 1931. In ihm analysiert Fromm, welche Funktion das Strafen für den Zusammenhalt der Gesellschaft hat. Der Beitrag ist angesichts der Diskussion um die Bedeutung des Strafens und der Strafandrohung als Prävention noch immer aktuell.

Zur Psychologie der Strafjustiz" dokumentiert das Interesse des dreißigjährigen Fromm – der eben seine psychoanalytische Ausbildung in Berlin abgeschlossen hatte – nach der sozialpsychologischen Bedeutung zu fragen, die das Strafen im Bereich der Justiz hat. Dass Fromm die Strafjustiz als nicht zweckmäßig beurteilt, hat in erster Linie mit ihrer gesellschaftlichen Funktion zu tun, autoritäre Verhältnisse aufrecht zu erhalten.

Die in diesem Sammelband enthaltenen Schriften wollen zum einen mit wichtigen frühen Arbeiten von Erich Fromm zum sozialpsychologischen Ansatz und zur Matriarchatsforschung (wieder) bekannt machen. Besonders hervorzuheben sind hier die beiden ersten Veröffentlichungen Fromms in der Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung aus dem Jahr 1932, die von der Beziehung zwischen Individuum und Gesellschaft handeln und für das Verständnis des Werkes von Fromm programmatisch sind. Zum anderen sind in diesem Sammelband eine Reihe von Beiträgen versammelt, die Ende der Sechziger Jahre entstanden sind. Unter den sehr lesenswerten Artikeln befindet sich auch eine kritische Streitschrift zur Entwicklung der Psychoanalyse in den Fünfziger und Sechziger Jahren. Sie trägt den Titel „Die Krise der Psychoanalyse“. Der damals populären ich-psychologischen Psychoanalyse wirft Fromm vor, den radikalen Ansatz Freuds zu verraten und das Augenmerk nicht mehr auf die meist unbewussten irrationalen Antriebskräfte des Menschen zu lenken.

This book is the first comprehensive intellectual biography of Max Horkheimer during the early and middle phases of his life (1895–1941). Drawing on unexamined new sources, John Abromeit describes the critical details of Horkheimer's intellectual development. This study recovers and reconstructs the model of early Critical Theory that guided the work of the Institute for Social Research in the 1930s. Horkheimer is remembered primarily as the co-author of Dialectic of Enlightenment, which he wrote with Theodor W. Adorno in the early 1940s. But few people realize that Horkheimer and Adorno did not begin working together seriously until the late 1930s or that the model of Critical Theory developed by Horkheimer and Erich Fromm in the late 1920s and early 1930s differs in crucial ways from Dialectic of Enlightenment. Abromeit highlights the ways in which Horkheimer's early Critical Theory remains relevant to contemporary theoretical discussions in a wide variety of fields.
