Switzerland is well-known as one of the safest countries on earth and as a prime example of efficiency and efficacy. One of the central reasons that such a country exists is the development of a culture based on protection, which is supported by the presence and production of national security. When in 2014 Swiss people voted in favour of a federal popular initiative against massive immigration, Salvatore Vitale, an immigrant living in Switzerland felt the need to research this phenomenon in order to comprehend where the motives for this constant need for security originate and how they became part of Swiss culture. In How to Secure a Country Vitale explores this country s national security measures by focusing on matterof-fact types of instructions, protocols, bureaucracies, and clear-cut solutions which he visualises in photographs, diagrams, and graphical illustrations. The result is a case study that can be used to explain the global context and the functioning of contemporary societies Essays by political scientists Jonas Hagmann (ETH Zurich) and Roland Bleiker (University of Queensland, Australia) provide an analysis of the structure of the Swiss security system and a view on the politics of photography. Lars Willumeit, curator and social anthropologist, will discuss attitudes, behaviours, and codes in 21st Century statehood. 118 illustrations

Museums often ask artists to curate their 'private collections' from their inventory as exhibitions. One is reminded of the famous The Artist Eye series in which Hockney, Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon and Bridget Riley put together their exhibition, or the historic exhibition Raid the Icebox, which Andy Warhol put together in 1969 from the collection of the Museum of Art of the Rhode Island School of Design. This exhibition and catalogue promise to be just as interesting, as the artist/curator is one of the innovative and international esteemed painters, drawers, photographers, book-makers of our time and the Museum of Art History in Vienna with its Kunstkammer is one of the greatest treasure troves in the world. The only common thread connecting the exhibits is the eye of the artist.Published alongside the exhibition at The Museum of Art History in Vienna (25 September to 2 December 2012).English and German text.

Emil Jakob Schindler written by Agnes Husslein-Arco and has been published by Hirmer Verlag GmbH this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Landscape painting, Austrian categories.

Viennese painter Emil Jakob Schindler (1842-92) is known for his idealized, poetic landscapes, "atmospheric Impressionist" paintings that represent a key moment in the shift from the opulence of Viennese art of the earlier part of the nineteenth century towards a new understanding of nature. Schindler's landscapes are influenced by romanticism, with their lonely chapels and couples walking in deep forests, but they also show the influence of the symbolist movement, the World Exhibition, and the Barbizon school--in addition to the longer Viennese tradition. Schindler's landscapes are of particular interest in part because he doesn't represent nature as separate from humanity--rather, by presenting not only people but water mills, steamboats, and other manmade objects, he suggests a fundamental harmony between humans and the natural world. This book reproduces more than one hundred of Schindler's paintings, accompanied by essays exploring his career, the artistic scene of his time, and his influence.

The Campaign For The German Imperial Constitution written by Friedrich Engels and has been published by CreateSpace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-03 with categories.

This refrain [Hecker, Struve, Blenker, Zitz and Blum, slay the German princes!- Ed.] which on every highway and in every tavern from the Palatinate to the Swiss frontier rang out on the lips of the South German "people's militia" to the well-known tune of "Surrounded by the Sea," a mixture of chorale and barrel-organ-this refrain sums up the whole character of the "magnificent uprising for the Imperial Constitution." Here you have in two lines their great men, their ultimate aims, their admirable staunchness, their noble hatred for the "tyrants" and at the same time their entire insight into the social and political situation. Amidst all the movements and convulsions in Germany which followed in the wake of the February Revolution and its subsequent development, the campaign for the Imperial Constitution stands out owing to its classically German character. Its occasion, its appearance, the way it conducted itself, its whole course, were through and through German. In the same way as the June days of 1848 mark the degree of the social and political development of France, so the campaign for the Imperial Constitution marks the degree of the social and political development of Germany, and especially of South Germany. The soul of the whole movement was the class of the petty bourgeoisie, usually known as the burghers, and it is precisely in Germany, and especially in South Germany, that this class is in preponderance. It was the petty bourgeoisie which, in the "March Clubs," the democratic constitutional clubs, the patriotic clubs, the multitude of so-called democratic press, swore to the Imperial Constitution its Grutli oaths, as widespread as they were innocuous, and carried on its fight against the "refractory" princes of which the only immediate result was admittedly the elevating consciousness of having fulfilled one's civic duty. It was the petty bourgeoisie, represented by the resolute and so-called extreme Left of the Frankfurt Assembly, i.e. in particular by the Stuttgart Parliament and the "Imperial Regency," which furnished the entire movement with its official leadership; lastly, the petty bourgeoisie was dominant in the local committees of the provincial diets, committees of public safety, provisional governments and constituent assemblies which in Saxony, on the Rhine and in South Germany won greater or lesser credit in the cause of the Imperial Constitution.
