April 2002 tötete der 19jährige ehemalige Schüler Robert Steinhäuser während der Abiturprüfungen im Erfurter Gutenberg Gymnasium 17 Menschen, darunter 12 Lehrer, zwei Mitschüler, die Schulsekretärin, einen Polizisten und erschoss schließlich sich selbst. Ganz Deutschland trauerte mit den Hinterbliebenen der Opfer dieses dramatischen Amoklaufes und die Frage nach dem, Warum' beschäftigte wochenlang die Schlagzeilen der Gazetten. Auf der Suche nach Gründen für diese schreckliche Tat wurden viele schnell fündig. Roberts exzessiver Konsum von Gewalt- und Horrorvideos zusammen mit seiner Leidenschaft für brutale Video- und Computerspiele sollten Ursache, Motivation und Vorbild für diese Tragödie sein. Für viele Eltern, Lehrer, Politiker und vor allem die Medien selbst war das ein naheliegender Zusammenhang, um das furchtbare Geschehen überhaupt erklären zu können. Gewalt in den Medien und besonders die Gewaltdarstellungen in Film und Fernsehen sowie brutale Video- und Computerspiele rücken nicht zum ersten Mal ins Blickfeld der Öffentlichkeit. Zum wiederholten Male werden deren schädigende Einflüsse und Wirkungspotentiale auf Kinder und Jugendliche fester Bestandteil der öffentlichen Diskussion. Doch auch Gegenstimmen sind zu hören, die auf andere Determinanten wie familiäre Situation, schulische Probleme und gesellschaftliche Zwänge als grundlegende Faktoren hinweisen, welche Gewaltbereitschaft in der Persönlichkeitsentwicklung des Jugendlichen verankern. Aufgrund der Ereignisse von Erfurt und der anschließenden Ambivalenz in der öffentlichen Diskussion um die Wirkung von Gewalt in den Medien entschloss ich mich, im Rahmen meiner Diplomarbeit nach Zusammenhängen zwischen medial erlebter Gewalt und aggressivem Verhalten von Kindern und Jugendlichen zu suchen. Eine solche Trennung scheint mir angebracht, da trotz vieler Gemeinsamkeiten sich die Medien Fernsehen einerseits und Computer- / Videospiel andererseits in Hinsicht auf Verbreitung, Zielgruppen, Entwicklung, historischem Hintergrund und der Art des Erlebens in wesentlichen Punkten voneinander unterscheiden.

In Human-Built World, thankfully, Thomas Hughes restores to technology the conceptual richness and depth it deserves by chronicling the ideas about technology expressed by influential Western thinkers who not only understood its multifaceted character but who also explored its creative potential. Hughes draws on an enormous range of literature, art, and architecture to explore what technology has brought to society and culture, and to explain how we might begin to develop an "ecotechnology" that works with, not against, ecological systems. From the "Creator" model of development of the sixteenth century to the "big science" of the 1940s and 1950s to the architecture of Frank Gehry, Hughes nimbly charts the myriad ways that technology has been woven into the social and cultural fabric of different eras and the promises and problems it has offered.
