The many adventures of the "epic" in modern times are fascinating topics in themselves. The Romantics claimed that every self-respecting nation should, at some time, have had one and they set out to reconstruct these epics for political as well as cultural reasons. Such epics represented earlier stages in the development of nation-states and in this modern world they were, for a long time, hard to appreciate. The introduction of tape recorders, however, brought the epic back in the limelight. It became fashionable for scholars to record long oral narratives, and to present them as long written poems that reflected deeply ingrained ideas. Because of this technology, the idea of the epic was revitalized. This volume presents critical analyses of epics in Sub-Saharan Africa, the former Soviet Union, South-East Asia, Medieval Europe, and America and discusses the process of revitalization, sometimes even invention, of epics in particular historical, political, and academic contexts. Jan Jansen is a member of the Department of Anthropology of the University of Leiden, Netherlands. Henk M.J. Maier is professor in the Department of Languages and Cultures of Southeast Asia and Oceania of the University of Leiden, Netherlands.

Outram takes us first to the court of Frederick William I of Prussia, who emerges not only as an administrative reformer and notorious militarist but also as a "master of fools," a ruler who used fools to prop up his uncertain power. The autobiography of the itinerant fool Peter Prosch affords a rare insider’s view of the small courts in Catholic south Germany, Austria, and Bavaria. Full of sharp observations of prelates and princes, the autobiography also records episodes of the extraordinary cruelty for which the German princely courts were notorious. Joseph Fröhlich, court fool in Dresden, presents more appealing facets of foolery. A sharp salesman and hero of the Meissen factories, he was deeply attached to the folk life of fooling. The book ends by tying the growth of Enlightenment skepticism to the demise of court foolery around 1800. Outram’s book is invaluable for giving us such a vivid depiction of the court fool and especially for revealing how this figure can shed new light on the wielding of power in Enlightenment Europe.

The monograph provides a model for a new history of comedy linking canonical with non-canonical works, the north and the south of the German speaking area and accounts for the predominance of translations, adaptations and music theatre. It analyses influential and successful comedies from 17th, 18th and early 19th century, which were performed and published in German in both Hamburg and Vienna in different versions. In four series of works and their versions, the positioning of comedies in theatre programs, book series and theatre literature is reconstructed along their writing and authoring strategies, institutional, cultural and mental-historical conditions. Agents like publishers, other authors and theatre managers, institutions such as theatres, literary academies and and their prizes as well as other textual formations like poetics, reviews or cultural policy treatises are considered to reconstruct the position of texts and performances. The majority of them are translations and adaptations. The Italian and French originals as well as the context of literary production in their respective countries of origin are analysed, as well as the adaptation to the 'target literature‘.
