Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Seit dem ausgehenden 20.Jahrhundert geraten die Massenmedien zunehmend in das Spannungsfeld zwischen Internationalisierung von Wirtschaft und Politik, nationalen Handlungsräumen und einer Lokalisierung der Lebenswelten. Vor diesem Hintergrund scheint ihre Verpflichtung an die Öffentlichkeit umso wichtiger, als Forum für öffentliche Meinungen und als Medium und Faktor öffentlicher Meinungs- und politischer Willensbildung zu dienen. Um diese Aufgabe gerecht zu sein, müssen und sollen die Medien unabhängig vom Staat und marktwirtschaftlichen Gesetzen agieren können. Doch Unabhängigkeit und Pluralität sind Sollwerte, denen die immer stärker den Globalisierungsprozessen ausgesetzten Mediengesellschaften, nicht ganz einhalten (können). Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit den Fragen nach dem Grad an Medienfreiheit in der heutigen Zeit, nach dem Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Medien, Macht und Markt, wenn die gesellschaftlichen Akteure aus Politik und Wirtschaft versuchen, die Vermittlungsfunktion der Medien zu beeinflussen und für sich einzusetzen. Dabei soll das digitale Zeitalter lediglich als Metapher für neuzeitlichen temporalen Rahmen verstanden werden. Da sich sowohl globale Entwicklungen als auch nationale Unterschiede im Vergleich besser abschätzen und klarer herausarbeiten lassen, wurde für die Analyse das Prinzip der komparativen Systemforschung gewählt. Dieser Festlegung liegt die Annahme zugrunde, dass unterschiedliche Strukturen, Normen und Werte in politischen Systemen und Kulturen jeweils unterschiedliche politische Kommunikationsrollen und Handlungsweisen herausbilden oder unterdrücken. Erst die grenzüberschreitende Perspektive öffnet den Blick für makrogesellschaftliche Kräfte und Strukturen, die innerhalb des eigenen Systems als so selbstverständlich wahrgenommen werden, dass sie nur von einer Außenperspektive durch den Vergleich erkennbar werden. Wichtig für die internationale Systemanalyse ist, dass die zu vergleichenden Einheiten nicht zu ähnlich sind, sich aber auch nicht zu sehr voneinander unterscheiden. Daher werden komparative Untersuchungen häufig so angelegt, dass gezielt solche Länder ausgewählt werden, die sich hinsichtlich der Kontextbedingungen für das interessierende Phänomen unterscheiden Auf diese Weise können allgemeine sowie spezifische Fragen über das Phänomen geprüft werden: Was gilt immer, unabhängig von den Kontexteinflüssen oder wie verhält sich der Untersuchungsgegenstand [...]
