Karl-Otto Apel is one of the most important German philosophers of the 20th century, and is finally coming to be recognized as such. However, his work is still poorly understood and inadequately treated throughout most of the world. In The Adventures of Transcendental Philosophy, critical theory scholar Eduardo Mendieta examines the philosophical origins of discourse ethics through the prism of Apel's thought. Mendieta finds that Apel fundamentally transformed German philosophy, which had become stagnant in the years before World War II, and deeply influenced later thinkers such as J rgen Habermas. Apel's turn toward pragmatism and analytic philosophy helped him bring the concept of a linguistic paradigm shift to Germany.

In the winter semester of 1935/36, Martin Heidegger gave the lecture "Fundamental Questions of Metaphysics"; it was published in 1962 under the title The Question of the Thing . This text is reproduced unchanged in volume 41 of the complete edition, marginalia on the pages refer to the first publication. In addition, five supplements are included.Kart's determination of the thingness of the thing is presented by Heidegger as the center of modern philosophical thinking, but with him early and medieval thoughts also culminate, so that he marks an essential turning point in thinking with regard to the thingness of the thing. Heidegger sees the center of Kant's thinking in the critique of pure reason, namely in the "system of all principles of pure understanding". Before Heidegger carries out the detailed and careful examination of the "principles" and makes them understandable as the center of the KdrV, he clarifies the terms used here and their history. Here you will also find the important reflections on the characterization of ancient, medieval and modern natural science, the reflections on "mathesis" and those that justify the primacy of the subject in modern philosophy. The Hypocritical Imagination written by John Llewellyn and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-03-07 with Philosophy categories.

For philosophers such as Kant, the imagination is the starting point for all thought. For others, such as Wittgenstein, what is important is only how the word 'imagination' is used. In spite of the attention the imagination has received from major philosophers, remarkably little has been written about the radically different interpretations they have made of it. The HypoCritical Imagination: Between Kant and Levinas is an outstanding contribution to this vaccuum. Focusing on Kant and Levinas, John Llewelyn takes us on a dazzling tour of the philosophical imagination. He shows us that despite the different treatments they accord to the imagination, there is much to be gained from comparing these two key thinkers. From Kant, Llewelyn shows how the imagination is the common root of all understanding. He contrasts this with the thought of Emmanuel Levinas, for whom the imagination plays an ambivalent role both as necessary for and a threat to recognition of the other. John Llewelyn also introduces the importance of the work of Heidegger Schelling, Hegel, Arendt and Derrida on the imagination and what this work can tell us about the relationship between the imagination and ethics, aesthetics and literature. The HypoCritical Imagination: Between Kant and Levinas is a brilliant reading of a neglected but important philosophical theme and is essential reading for those in contemporary philosophy, art theory and literature.

The end of the Second World War opened a new era for science in public life. Heisenberg in the Atomic Age explores the transformations of science's public presence in the postwar Federal Republic of Germany. It shows how Heisenberg's philosophical commentaries, circulating in the mass media, secured his role as science's public philosopher, and it reflects on his policy engagements and public political stands, which helped redefine the relationship between science and the state. With deep archival grounding, the book tracks Heisenberg's interactions with intellectuals from Heidegger to Habermas and political leaders from Adenauer to Brandt. It also traces his evolving statements about his wartime research on nuclear fission for the National Socialist regime. Working between the history of science and German history, the book's central theme is the place of scientific rationality in public life - after the atomic bomb, in the wake of the Third Reich.

The Virtual Window written by Anne Friedberg and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-13 with Architecture categories.

From the Renaissance idea of the painting as an open window to the nested windows and multiple images on today's cinema, television, and computer screens: a cultural history of the metaphoric, literal, and virtual window. As we spend more and more of our time staring at the screens of movies, televisions, computers, and handheld devices—"windows" full of moving images, texts, and icons—how the world is framed has become as important as what is in the frame. In The Virtual Window, Anne Friedberg examines the window as metaphor, as architectural component, and as an opening to the dematerialized reality we see on the screen. In De pictura (1435), Leon Battista Alberti famously instructed painters to consider the frame of the painting as an open window. Taking Alberti's metaphor as her starting point, Friedberg tracks shifts in the perspectival paradigm as she gives us histories of the architectural window, developments in glass and transparency, and the emerging apparatuses of photography, cinema, television, and digital imaging. Single-point perspective—Alberti's metaphorical window—has long been challenged by modern painting, modern architecture, and moving-image technologies. And yet, notes Friedberg, for most of the twentieth century the dominant form of the moving image was a single image in a single frame. The fractured modernism exemplified by cubist painting, for example, remained largely confined to experimental, avant-garde work. On the computer screen, however, where multiple 'windows' coexist and overlap, perspective may have met its end. In this wide-ranging book, Friedberg considers such topics as the framed view of the camera obscura, Le Corbusier's mandates for the architectural window, Eisenstein's opinions on the shape of the movie screen, and the multiple images and nested windows commonly displayed on screens today. The Virtual Window proposes a new logic of visuality, framed and virtual: an architecture not only of space but of time.

The Weirdness Of Being written by Ivo De Gennaro and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-20 with Philosophy categories.

The ongoing publication of Heidegger's complete works has called into question the interpretive and translative practices that have historicized Heidegger's thinking through the adaptation of categories and mind-sets inherited from metaphysics. Ivo De Gennaro argues that the posthumous treatises in particular - many of which have yet to be translated into English - show that the "other onset of thinking" that Being and Time inaugurated and which those historicizing accounts have interpreted and translated away, has already taken place. This book, on the other hand, speaks solely from that other onset, that of being itself. While arguing the "one-pointedness" of Heidegger's entire path of thinking, De Gennaro draws mainly on the posthumous treatises to offer both a provisional exploration of, and an introduction to, a thinking whose sense and implications have barely begun to emerge. This challenging and original interpretation marks an important contribution to Heidegger scholarship.

Heidegger S Philosophy Of Being written by Herman Philipse and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Philosophy categories.

This text interprets and evaluates the topic of Martin Heidegger's philosphy in the context of the full range of Heidegger's thought. With this comprehensive approach, Herman Philipse distinguishes the center from the periphery, the essential from the incidental in Heidegger's philosophy. Among other achievements this allows him to shed light on the controversial relationship between Heidegger's life and thought - in particular the connections between his philosophy and his involvement with Nazism.
