In dieser Arbeit wird interdisziplinär der Frage nach den historischen Rahmenbedingungen und dem ideologischen Gehalt hochmittelalterlicher Kunst an drei konkreten Beispielen nachgegangen. Die Analyse der Kunstwerke erfolgt auf der Basis der jeweiligen historischen und geistesgeschichtlichen Wurzeln, der konkreten politischen Hintergründe und ideologisch motivierten Interessen der Bauherrn. Die verschiedenen Bereiche (Architektur, Glasmalerei, Plastik etc.) werden nicht getrennt voneinander betrachtet, sondern im Gesamtrahmen des jeweiligen Baus analysiert. Die drei untersuchten Benediktinerabteien standen als Grablege in einem besonders engen Verhältnis zum Königtum und hatten Anteil an der Herausbildung der spezifischen französischen Königsidee. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung steht die Herausbildung eines "Königsbildes", an dessen Ausprägung und Weiterverbreitung alle drei Abteien eigenständig beteiligt waren. Die Abtei Saint-Denis als vermeintlicher "Gründungsbau" der Gotik spielt hierbei nicht die so oft betonte und stilisierte Sonder- oder Führungsrolle. Die hier formulierten Ansprüche und Bildungsreformen entstanden vielmehr in einer kunsthistorisch vielfältigen Situation im Umfeld miteinander konkurrierender Institutionen, die jeweils eigene politische Interessen vertraten und eigene künstlerische Entwicklungen hervorbrachten.
