In Deutschland entscheidet vielerorts noch der Status der Kirchenmitgliedschaft, ob man christlich bestattet wird. In dieser Studie wird der Fokus auf Akteurinnen und Akteure (Pfarrerinnen und Pfarrer, ein evangelischer Diakon) aus dem kirchlichen Bereich gelegt, die eine christliche Bestattung ungetaufter Menschen durchführen. Ihre Perspektiven, Ziele und konkreten Beschreibungen der Abläufe eines solchen Rituals sowie die Gedanken und Reflektionen konfessionsloser Angehöriger, die eine solche Bestattung für Verstorbene erlebt haben, werden in diesem Buch dargestellt und auf Kommunikations- und Lernprozesse sowie Diskussions- und Konfliktpunkte hin untersucht. A theological-empirical study on communication processes involved in the Christian-motivated burial of non-religious people] It is (yet) common in Germany to be a member of the Christian church in order to get a proper Christian funeral. However, there is a small but constantly increasing number of people for whom a Christian funeral is held, despite the fact that the deceased was not even baptised. In this study the focus is set on protagonists (their perspective on the people they are holding a funeral service for, secularism and the function and purpose of this ritual including its implementation) as well as relatives who attended/appealed for such services for a deceased family member or friend. What do thing about such an ;in church law ;"exceptional" ritual and how do they reflect on things they learned before, during and after the ritual are question this study tries to show and correlate to topics of the practical theological debate.

Mit dieser Tiefenstudie werden diejenigen, die Andachten und Gottesdienste halten oder Einrichtungen der Altenpflege leiten, dazu angeregt, geistliche Zusammenkünfte im System ihrer Häuser wahrzunehmen, wertzuschätzen und sie im Zusammenspiel aller Beteiligten zu profilieren. Zur zukünftigen Entwicklung von Gottesdiensthilfen und Fortbildungsangeboten für geistliche Zusammenkünfte in der Altenhilfe liefert die Untersuchung damit erstmals eine empirisch gesicherte Basis. Spiritual gatherings are part of the overall system of the respective institution and are influenced by the conditions present there. Within the framework of an empirical study, leaders of devotions and church services were interrogated in depth about this field of practice. The present evaluation provides detailed results and classifies them practically and theologically. With this comprehensive study, those who hold devotions and church services or lead facilities for the care of the elderly are encouraged to embrace and appreciate spiritual gatherings within the system of their homes and to shape them in connection with all those involved. The study thus provides for the first time an empirically sound basis for the future development of aids in church service and opportunities for training in spiritual gatherings in the care of the elderly. The empirical study, the results of which are presented here, fills this gap in research. On the basis of the four selected diaconal fields of action – daycare centres for children, institutions for the elderly, institutions for the disabled, and church services for employees – the study develops a topography of this specific landscape of church service and devotion, deriving consequences for education and further training and for the development of appropriate worship materials.
