“कर्म को कर्मयोग नहीं कहते। कर्मयोग एक आध्यात्मिक साधना है जिसके द्वारा मनुष्य कर्म करते हुए भी उसके दोष से उसी प्रकार निर्लिप्त बना रहता है जिस प्रकार कमल का पत्ता जल से अलिप्त ही बना रहता है (‘पद्मपत्रमिवाम्भसा’- गीता ५/१०)। कर्मयोग एक भाव है, उसका एक दर्शन है, उसकी साधना के क्रमसोपान है तथा अन्य योगों की तरह उसका लक्ष्य भी ‘मुक्ति’ ही है। स्वामी विवेकानन्द ने अपने कर्मयोगपरक व्याख्यानों में इसे भलीभाँति विस्तार से समझाया है। रामकृष्ण मिशन के भूतपूर्व परम उपाध्यक्ष स्वामी तपस्यानन्दजी महाराज ने कर्मयोग को पुनरीक्षित करते हुए और भी अधिक संक्षिप्त, सरल तथा स्पष्ट कर दिया है। प्रस्तुत प्रकाशन उसी पुनर्कथित तथा संक्षिप्त कर्मयोग का हिन्दी अनुवाद है। महाभारत में यद्यपि सती-नारी, तुलाधारवैश्य एवं ‘व्याधगीता’ प्रसंगों द्वारा कर्मयोग को मुक्ति प्राप्ति की स्वतन्त्र साधना के रूप में प्रतिपादित किया गया है; परन्तु उस शैली में आधुनिकता का अभाव है। आधुनिक मानसिकता के अनुरूप ही इस पुस्तक में विषय का विवेचन किया गया है और साथ ही उसे भगवान् बुद्ध के जीवन दर्शन से जोड़ दिया गया है। दोनों को मिलाकर पढ़ने से विषय और भी अधिक स्पष्ट हो जाता है।”

कबीर का फक्कड़पन, तुलसी का लोक-मांगल्य और रवीन्द्र का सौन्दर्यबोध की त्रयी निराला में न केवल विलीन होती है बल्कि उनके कृतित्व और व्यक्तित्व को ऐसी ऊँचाइयाँ प्रदान करती है जिसका उदाहरण हिन्दी साहित्य में विरल है। यही स्थापना है ‘निराला की साहित्य साधना’ की। डॉ. रामविलास शर्मा की तीन खंडों में उपलब्ध ऐसी कृति है जिसमें हिन्दी आलोचना के विभिन्न आयामों का उद्घाटन हुआ है। रामविलास शर्मा अरसे तक निराला के साथ रहे थे और वे उनकी रचना-प्रक्रिया तथा जीवन-शैली के तटस्थ द्रष्टा थे। उन्होंने अपना पहला निबन्ध निराला पर ही लिखा था और उनकी पहली आलोचनात्मक पुस्तक भी निराला पर केन्द्रित होकर आई, मगर इससे रामविलास शर्मा का जी नहीं भरा। अनवरत-शोध और अध्ययन के परिणामस्वरूप उनकी अविस्मरणीय कृति ‘निराला की साहित्य साधना’ हमारे सामने आई। यह कृति निराला का जीवन-चरित भी है और उनके साहित्य का मूल्यांकन भी। ‘निराला की साहित्य साधना’ में निराला के अनेक अल्पज्ञात अथवा अज्ञात तथ्यों का उद्घाटन हुआ है। निराला के व्यक्तित्व के जटिल और सूक्ष्म अन्तर्विरोधों से निःसृत कृतित्व का इस पुस्तक में मर्मस्पर्शी मूल्यांकन हुआ है जो अत्यन्त दुर्लभ तो है ही, बेमिसाल भी है।
