This open access book discusses and addresses the compelling questions concerning the ideals of citizenship, the processes of learning to fulfill these ideals, and possibilities of education in fostering citizenship. Rather than advocating for one framework, the authors demonstrate the continuously contested nature of the concept of citizenship as theoretically discussed and practically experienced. The monograph combines, in an unconventional way, selected philosophical accounts and everyday experiences from certain locations in Tanzania and Uganda. It provides contributions from philosophical ideas drawing on scholars such as Chantal Mouffe, Rosi Braidotti, Theodor Adorno, and Etienne Balibar on the one hand, and the conceptions articulated by groups of inhabitants of rural and urban settings in Africa, on the other hand. Western thought has often dismissed shadows as fictional, but what if fictions reveal original truths? Drawing on an anti-Platonic tradition in critical theory, Lawtoo adopts ethical, anthropological, and philosophical lenses to offer new readings of Joseph Conrad’s novels and the postcolonial and cinematic works that respond to his oeuvre. He argues that Conrad’s fascination with doubles urges readers to reflect on the two sides of mimesis: one side is dark and pathological, and involves the escalation of violence, contagious epidemics, and catastrophic storms; the other side is luminous and therapeutic, and promotes communal survival, postcolonial reconciliation, and plastic adaptations to changing environments. La Repubblica e la Repubblica delle lettere del secondo dopoguerra hanno come minimo comun denominatore l’antifascismo. Questo legittimo impegno civile e letterario ha dato vita a una cultura che ha saputo esprimere momenti e pagine indimenticabili, che anche gli autori di questo librino hanno letto e studiato. Nella seconda metà del Novecento, non scompaiono tuttavia le ‘narrazioni di destra’. Qui, se ne sono selezionate sei, in circa 35 anni di vita repubblicana, tra 1953 e 1986, a partire da sei ‘solisti’ che rivendicano, secondo modalità differenti, un’adesione al fascismo. Certo, da Rimanelli a Mazzantini, passando per Berto, Zangrandi, Virgili e Salierno, la ‘narrazione filofascista’ pubblicata nel periodo della Prima Repubblica appare ancora come un tabù letterario e ‘saggiarla’ sembra quasi un tentativo di revisione storica scomodo tanto al pubblico quanto alla critica. Quando invece leggere questi scritti che mettono al centro la storia di una generazione pregna di immagini e idee del Ventennio, tese poi a concretarsi in quell’adesione che si esplica in seno alle milizie dei volontari fascisti, alle truppe della Repubblica Sociale, ai movimenti sovversivi dell’estrema destra, discopre un mondo di cui bisogna tener conto, oggi forse più di ieri, per interrogare e provare a capire un ritorno del fascismo, che non è solo più una moda, un fondale, come per tanta narrativa italiana (di genere e non solo) tra anni Novanta e Duemila.

Duque Silva si oppone con fermezza alla feroce dinamica tra debitore e creditore, che ha luogo non solo in Squid Game ma nella vita di tutti i giorni. D’altra parte il suo libro è un sincero sforzo per rispettare appieno la funzione di ogni spoiler: “rovinare la fine di una storia”, non quella di Squid Game ma del gioco postcapitalista in cui viviamo.

Nell’immaginario collettivo, del suo tempo e della modernità, Socrate è il simbolo di una krisis a carattere antropologico-culturale e politico. È una figura sfuggente e, dunque, capace di adattarsi a qualsiasi contesto, in particolare artistico. Dapprima personaggio teatrale, a partire dal XX secolo diventa un personaggio cinematografico. Il presente lavoro, intrecciando l’analisi cinematografica a quella storico-filosofica, si propone non soltanto di analizzare i quattro film che lo vedono protagonista, Processo e morte di Socrate (1940), Barefoot in Athens (1966), Socrate (1970) e Il banchetto di Platone (1989) ma soprattutto, di mostrare che il famoso pensatore, in virtù della propria sfuggente essenza, diviene una cartina tornasole per comprendere le ideologie e i mutamenti storici alla base della nostra contemporaneità.
