Este livro destina-se a educadores(as) e pesquisadores(as) interessados(as) na relação com os estudos de jovens da escola média. Ele apresenta uma análise dos sentidos que jovens atribuem às suas experiências, durante três anos, em uma escola de ensino médio em São Paulo, tendo como foco as possibilidades, ou não, de diálogo entre seus diferentes modos de aprender. Para tanto, realiza o cruzamento dos achados obtidos nos inventários de saber (textos produzidos sobre as aprendizagens valorizadas) com estudantes do primeiro ano; as entrevistas com jovens que participaram dos inventários de saber no segundo ano; uma segunda entrevista com jovens que realizaram os inventários e participaram da primeira entrevista, no terceiro ano, além das observações nas aulas de Arte por dois meses. Destaco algumas de suas contribuições: o caráter processual da metodologia construída, pela participação de jovens nos diferentes procedimentos de pesquisa ao longo dos três anos; a compreensão de aspectos da ambiguidade vivida pelos(as) jovens entre gostar da escola e ter dificuldade de mobilização para adentrar nas suas lógicas específicas de apropriação dos saberes. Vale destacar que, atualmente, o governo justifica a diminuição da formação obrigatória e a complementação dos estudos por "itinerários formativos" (ver reforma do ensino médio: Lei n.o 13.415/2017), com o argumento de "possibilitar maior interesse pelos estudos". Como o(a) jovem pode estar preparado(a) para uma escolha de aprender determinados conhecimentos sem ter tido contato com suas referências? Neste estudo os(as) jovens trazem elementos de suas experiências na escola e fora dela que permitem confirmar que o gosto por determinados modos de aprender é construído socialmente. Não é possível "escolher" entre aprender saberes de uma área ou de outra sem encontros significativos com atividades que permitam adentrar nas suas lógicas específicas, em diálogo com os saberes já construídos em outros espaços sociais. Não basta promover atividades "instrumentais" e fragmentadas para "passar de ano". É necessário investimentos na educação, o reconhecimento dos saberes dos(as) jovens, atividades educativas que possibilitem o diálogo entre diferentes saberes, a ampliação de referências culturais, valorização de professores, tempos e espaços voltados para estudos aprofundados, políticas para dar condições aos(às) jovens de construírem sua continuidade aos estudos. Questões embrionárias neste livro desdobram-se em minha trajetória como pesquisadora em educação e se atualizam em estudos posteriores.
