Since the beginning of the 1990s a number of middle income countries, including Thailand, have taken on a new role within the international asylum system. They had until then only hosted refugees coming from neighboring countries, or at least countries from within their region. Since, they started attracting refugees from across the world, becoming global havens. The management of these new populations is a challenge, and how that challenge is addressed in these countries will becoming more and more important as they play an increasingly central role in the international asylum system. In Thailand, almost all of these new refugees not coming from neighboring countries live in Bangkok, and are therefore referred to as “urban refugees”. What approach to the management of urban refugees has the Thai state taken, without the constraint of the Refugee Convention? Can non-state actors fill gaps in refugee protection left by the state? What level of protection can be provided to urban refugees in a non-signatory country like Thailand? The thesis shows that the Thai urban refugee management system is hostile and punitive towards refugees, that non-state actors have not managed to fill the gaps in refugee protection created by this approach, and that as a result the level of protection achieve for urban refugees in the country is very low. Moreover, the thesis shows that Thai state has successfully bended the arm of refugee advocates, whether UNHCR of civil society organizations, to the point where neither are in a position to challenge its policies.

Hope For A Better World written by Monique Mitchell and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The book is basically my memoir; however, there are some fictitious characters but all is based on real events. Flashback to my childhood in Madagascar: country with a fascinating history and a unique population, with ethnic characteristics in my own family. Recollecting past personal tragedies in childhood and situating myself in the present where loving people( my family and church friends) are surrounding me, motivating me to be a good person and see life in a happy perspective. In particular, feeling as a great privilege to be part of the melting pot in the USA. Recollection of the life at the Faculty of Medecine (Angers), France and the following years in Paris, graduating in social studies. Identifying the influence of the French culture as a pivotal factor in my life and grateful to Bon Papa (grandfather)who, by becoming a naturalized French citizen enabled his descendants to benefit from their French education, while identifying their difference and /or alienation, could also choose individually, how to find a balance between a dual culture they were./are exposed to (their own native and the acquired one). An interesting trip to the Champagne region through the wine road and to the east of France (Alsace), rich in war (WWI) memories. And there also, exhilarating history about the Statute of Liberty: designed and constructed (before being brought to the USA) by the French architect, Frédéric August Bartholdi. Marriage to an American business man and birth of son in 1965 but early on, had to raise her child as a single mother due unsurmountable challenges in the marriage. Worked for 20years for the UN in 9 countries in Africa and Asia, all called hardship posts, including those for keep-peacing missions located in politically challenged and/or war-torn countries. For each country, there is a description, besides my administrative work, of history, culture, population etc... Farewell trip to Madagascar visiting the tomb of my grand parents with great sadness, fond memories and gratefulness for having raised me as a Christian child with the moral values I still carry with me at this day. Joining my American family on a permanent basis to be with my beloved son. Birth of granddaughter, Jade, who is now a teenager and praying for all members of my family to be blessed by God in the country where I am now conveying my message for love and tolerance in my book "Hope For a Better Work".

At its heart, A Life in Dark Places is an adventure story, its heroes the men and women who have risked their lives to minister to the vulnerable. Paul Giannone writes masterfully about what he has seen and experienced with a keen eye for detail and a leavening of humor. The author has found himself a participant in some of the most dramatic and horrific events of the past half century—America's defeat in Vietnam and the subsequent “boat people” crisis; the fall of the Shah of Iran; the unspeakable acts committed by violent groups in sub-Saharan Africa, the tension along the Pakistan-Afghan border following 9-11, the flood of refugees unleashed by the war in Syria. A Life in Dark Placesis more than a memoir of one man's journey and evolution. It is a wakeup call to America and its citizens.

'As good a guide to a fascinating country in transformation as you will get.' Management Today In the course of a couple of generations, South Koreans took themselves out of the paddy fields and into Silicon Valley, establishing themselves as a democracy alongside the advanced countries of the world. Yet for all their ambition and achievement, the new Koreans are a curiously self-deprecating people. Theirs is a land with a rich and complex past, certain aspects of which they would prefer to forget as they focus on the future. Having lived and worked in South Korea for many years, Michael Breen considers what drives the nation today, and where it is heading. Through insightful anecdotes and observations, he provides a compelling portrait of Asia's most contradictory and polarized country. South Koreans are motivated by defiance, Breen argues: defiance of their antagonistic neighbour, North Korea, of their own history and of international opinion. Here is an overlooked nation with, great drive, determined to succeed on its own terms.

Troubled Transit written by Antje Missbach and has been published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-29 with Social Science categories.

Troubled Transit considers the situation of asylum seekers stuck in limbo in Indonesia from a number of perspectives. It presents not only the narratives of many transit migrants but also the perceptions of Indonesian authorities and of representatives of international and non-government organizations responsible for the care of transiting asylum seekers. Fascinated by the extraordinary and seemingly limitless resilience shown by asylum seekers during their often lengthy and dangerous journeys, the author highlights one particular fragment of their journeys - their time in Indonesia, which many expect to be the last stepping stone to a new life. While they long for their new life to unfold, most asylum seekers become embroiled in the complexities of living in transit. Indonesia, a vast archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, is more than a location where people spend time waiting; it is a nation state that interacts with transiting asylum seekers and formulates policies that have a profound impact on their experience in transit there. Troubled Transit tries to explain the complexities faced by the transiting migrants within the context of the Indonesian government and its political challenges, including its relationship with Australia. The Australia-centric view of recent asylum seeker issues has tended to ignore the larger socio-political context of the migratory routes and the perspectives of transit states towards asylum seekers stuck in transit. This book hopes to direct the Australia-centric gaze northwards to take Indonesian policies and policymaking into account, thereby giving Indonesia more relevance as a transit country and as an important partner in regional protection schemes and migration management. Even though some Indonesian policies and practices are less than favourable for asylum seekers, and even reprehensible from a human rights perspective, more attention must be paid to ongoing developments that impact on transiting asylum seekers in Indonesia if any of the hardships they suffer there are to be alleviated.
