This book examines the careers of three of Nazi cinema's preeminent movie actresses, painting a unique portrait of mass entertainment and stardom under Nazi rule. Bruns uses undiscovered sources and a new approach, which integrates visual analysis within a thorough political and social context, to trace how the Nazis tried to use films and stars to build National Socialism. This analysis focuses on female stars - an important but largely unexplored area - because they were mostly responsible for Nazi cinema's spectacular commercial success and political failure. Challenging earlier studies, which view Nazi cinema as an effective propaganda instrument that helped turn Germans into devoted "Aryan" mothers and tough warriors, the book shows that the Nazi regime's liaison with the cinema was ambivalent. Films failed to disseminate a coherent political message and to Nazify German society. However, they helped the regime maintain power by diverting people's attention from the brutality of Hitler's rule and, eventually, from impending defeat.

This volume seeks to trace the robustly critical process of historical, political and personal self-examination to be found in German literature of the 1990s. Scholars from Australia, Britain, Germany, and the USA have contributed essays which deal with a broad range of East and West German writers (Biskupek, Grass, Hilbig, Königsdorf, Maron, Mensching, Walser, Wenzel, and Wolf) as well as with general topics such as literature and the Stasi, and the response to the aftermath of unification to be found in autobiographical writing, lyric poetry, satirical fiction and cabaret texts. For all their diversity, a common thread can be discerned in these writers and the literature they have produced: a concern for the particularity of the East German experience, past and present, and a desire to explore that discrete identity - in both its positive and negative aspects - which stubbornly persisted over a decade in which the citizens of the German Democratic Republic saw themselves, their institutions, and their culture, swept up and consigned to oblivion.

This thesis examines aspects of selected political and satirical Kabarett as a hitherto untapped resource within advanced foreign language learning classrooms. Given that Kabarett exploits socio-historical, political, literary and linguistic knowledge in a humorous and thought-provoking way, it is a contention of this thesis that Kabarett materials and techniques could enrich the language learning experience. The thesis examines Kabarett within two distinct historical and political contexts (between the First and Second World War and 'East' German Kabarett since 1990), defining cultural and linguistic aspects of language and language use as 'creative misbehaviour'. 'Creative misbehaviour' is exemplified on pragmatic and textual levels, and on lexical, syntactic, phonetic and non-verbal levels of language use. The thesis investigates how aspects of the strategies of Kabarett relate to concerns and considerations in foreign language learning and teaching. Special attention is directed at the problems associated with understanding and creating Kabarett-type material, particularly with respect to strategies and techniques, intercultural awareness and form-focused language work. Included in the investigation is a consideration of the forms of didactic guidance for exploiting aspects of Kabarett within the language classroom. This study suggests that 'creative misbehaviour', as exemplified by selective Kabarett materials and techniques, could be used within advanced foreign language learning classrooms in a potentially fruitful way in order to address cultural, cognitive, communicative, and creative language work.
