The book represents the best of what can be found in teaching and learning, in general, and in the quest for meaningful ways to understand curricula in particular. The co-authors of this volume on “10 Great Curricula” framed their inquiries into progressive, democratic curricula, at least initially, through Marsh and Willis’ (2007) notions of planned, enacted, and lived curricula. These frames helped the writers think about how to engage a curriculum as it is developed, delivered, and lived by its participants, and for the inquirers to actually become participantinquirers in the curriculum at hand. The chapters depict the power, the possibility, and the transformational potential of “great” progressive curricula today by locating them in schools and in the community, by making them come alive to the reader, and by suggesting means through which the reader can adopt a more progressive, democratic stance to curriculum despite the seemingly overwhelming nature of the conservative, traditionalist, instrumentalist movements in curriculum, teaching, and assessment today. The book is intended for students of education, teaching, and curriculum, undergraduates, graduates, and practicing educational professionals, especially those looking for examples in the world in which progressive, democratic ideals are nurtured and practiced.

Since the early twentieth century, American educators have been engaged in a heated debate over what schools should teach and how they should teach it. The partisans—"education progressives" and "education traditionalists"—have usually kept their disagreements within the walls of the nation's schools of education. Periodically, however, arguments have erupted which have generated headlines and attracted public attention, making clear the potential for bitterness and rancor in education politics. In the 1990s, progressives and traditionalists squared off in a dispute over reading and mathematics. Arguments over how best to teach these two subjects is detailed in The Great Curriculum Debate: How Should We Teach Reading and Math? This book includes contributions from distinguished scholars from both sides of the debate, as well as influential nonpartisans. The proponents of "whole language" and "phonics" present their opposing views on reading. This report proposes a curriculum model for education of students in the age group of 10 to 14 years in Scotland. It also proposes a policy of autonomy within guidelines so that secondary schools and their associated primary schools can develop new partnerships for collaborative planning of curriculum, pupil care, learning support, assessment, recording, and reporting. Section 1 addresses the overall aims of the 10-14 program, reviewing its history, discussing the major issues in education at the middle level, and presenting the desirable outcomes of the program with respect to curriculum and learning. Section 2 describes the curriculum design in detail, discussing (1) the process of collaborative planning; (2) specific curricular goals of the 10-14 program; (3) the range of the curriculum; (4) essential conditions for education 10-14; and (5) ways and means. Section 3 focuses on the child as a learner, discussing the processes of learning, teaching, assessment, recording, and reporting and pupil care. Section 4 develops proposals for collaborative management of education 10-14, while section 5 discusses major implications of the program for the educational system. Appended are five supplementary sections tagged to portions of the text, along with a list of studies commissioned by the program directing committee and a list of sources and contacts for consultation, advice, and evidence.
