Ten years after a one-loss season and being ranked third in the nation, the University of Pittsburgh's historic football team had fallen on hard times. In 1973, the team hired former All-American Johnny Majors to right the ship, and he promptly recruited Tony Dorsett and Al Romano. Over the next four years, the new-look Panthers were brought back to prominence with stunning victories, culminating in the 1976 NCAA National Championship. Dorsett, a future Pro Football Hall of Famer, became the first college running back to eclipse two thousand yards in a season and was awarded the Heisman Trophy in the championship year. Author David Finoli tells the story of one of the most dramatic turnarounds in college football history.

From 1973 through 1982, Pitt had one of the nation's most successful football programs, including a national championship in 1976. From 1976 through 1982, no team in college football won more games than the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. Pitt captured the 1976 national championship with a perfect 12-0 record, highlighted by the brilliance of Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett. The memorable season capped one of the most stunning turnarounds in college football history. From 1964 through 1972, Pitt never had a winning season, and university officials had begun to consider the possible dissolution of the football program. But the hiring of coach Johnny Majors, fresh from an impressive revitalization of the program at Iowa State University, breathed life into Pitt's football fortunes. Majors brought with him a young, aggressive staff of assistant coaches, men whose contacts and experiences touched and reached recruiting regions Pitt had never harvested. Beginning in 1973, Pitt registered eleven consecutive winning seasons. Following the championship season, Majors returned to his native Tennessee, where he had been an All-America halfback during the 1950s. Jackie Sherrill, Majors' replacement at Pitt, continued the winning ways, registering five straight winning campaigns, including three straight 11-1 seasons from 1979 through 1981. Pitt's football program produced numerous All-Americans, first-round NFL draft choices and brought a level of sustained recognition to the university's football--recognition that it hasn't reached since.

Do we know what we're doing, and why? Psychological research seems to suggest not: reflection and self-awareness are surprisingly uncommon and inaccurate. John M. Doris presents a new account of agency and responsibility, which reconciles our understanding of ourselves as moral agents with empirical work on the unconscious mind.

This book addresses the need to radically transform societies plagued by racism. It places prominence on persistent racialized violence in the lives of Black Americans as influential in how Black people in the U.S. and abroad perceive themselves as Black in juxtaposition to their perceptions of White people and other People of Color. An absence of understanding of the often-masked role of violence in the lives of Black people increases the likelihood of reproducing it. The author offers a reformulation of racial identity theory to examine the construction of Manichaeism in people and societies, and how meaningful engagement that confronts the violence is vital to psychological development, though this engagement also is not without dire risks.

It was my friend, Howard Roby, who first talked me into starting my memoirs. It is largely his fault, as well, that I have dwelled upon myself for not just one, but two books that make up this tome that is my life. Because I pledged to myself that I would always keep my eye on the facts and would not be carried away with any "bull", whatsoever. I have kept the famous saying by the tennis player, John McEnroe, in mind throughout: "The older I get, the better I was," Today, in spite of all the ill winds that circulate among businesses, I am in my seventieth year with no financial worries and am relatively healthy to boot. This results from my lifetime habit of hardwork, long hours, and continual challenges as I have made sure that I am providing well for my family. Has it been worth it? What do I have to show for it besides the material comforts? Was my life a success? So finally, I would like to see us play on the same side together, family, friends and world. After all, everyone's a mate!

Physician-scientists are unusual creatures. While we are drawn to the clinical challenges of our patients, we are also drawn to the opportunities that our patients’ medical problems bring to science. This book contains the unique experiences and encounters that drew 20 accomplished physician-scientists to this profession. These personal stories are those of people and circumstances that have had profound effects on our career decisions, our creative opportunities, and our lives. These stories also serve to highlight the lessons learned along the way and the distinct attributes of these women and men of medicine and science. Our combined hope is that our collective biographies will enhance the public understanding of our profession, will move people from medicine to science and from science to medicine, and will inspire those who are contemplating this extraordinary profession. “It is a rare gift to benefit from the collective wisdom of so many individuals at the same time. These physician scientists have provided readers with helpful advice and thoughtful encouragement. The interesting and thought provoking essays in Medicine Science and Dreams can be read and digested one at a time or all at once in sequence. They provide lessons to be learned by any physician-scientist, whether just starting out or in the middle of a research career. Schwartz has done readers a great service and has added to the legacy of these prominent and successful physician-scientists.” Book review in JAMA, September 7, 2011—Vol 306, No. 9 by Derek S. Wheeler, MD
