This work aims at designing and characterizing diode laser based master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) systems, which are targeted to be implemented into micro light detection and ranging (LIDAR) or differential absorption LIDAR (DIAL) systems for water vapor and aerosol detections. These light sources operate in the ns-pulse regime at a repetition rate of 25 kHz, leading to a resolution in the meter range in an altitude of 6 km. The monolithic MOPA, where Master Oscillator (MO) and Power Amplifier (PA) are integrated on one single chip, operates at 1064 nm wavelength. A peak power of 16.3 W with a pulse width of 3 ns was obtained. A spectral linewidth of about 150 pm and a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 30 dB was observed. A ratio of 9% between the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and the laser was estimated. These spectral properties fulfill the requirements for aerosol detection. The hybrid MOPA systems have separate chips for MO and PA. Different hybrid MOPA systems provide a stabilized wavelength at 1064 nm, a tunable wavelength around 975 nm and a dual wavelength around 964 nm. They therefore enable to detect a well-defined absorption line, scan over absorption line and switch between on/off line in DIAL applications, respectively. Their spectral linewidth is below 10 pm, limited by the resolution of the spectrum analyzer. An SMSR of more than 50 dB for the MO and of more than 37 dB for the whole MOPA was reached. A ratio between ASE and laser below 1% was estimated. These spectral properties meet the requirements for water vapor absorption lines detection at atmospheric condition. Diode laser based MOPA systems were therefore proven to be potential light sources for micro-pulse-LIDAR systems – the basis for a new generation of ultra-compact, low-cost systems.

Durch die Steigerung der Dynamik von Laser-Materialbearbeitungsprozessen mittels Diodenlasern wächst der Bedarf an hochdynamischen Stromquellen, mit denen die Emitter betrieben werden können. Dabei nehmen mannigfaltige Randbedingungen Einfluss auf den grundlegenden Systemaufbau der stromgeregelten leistungselektronischen Systeme. Es wird das industrielle Einsatzgebiet der Stromquellen beschrieben. Verschiedene gebräuchliche Konvertertopologien des gegenwärtigen Standes der Technik werden hinsichtlich der Eignung für den Einsatz in diesem Umfeld untersucht. Mit Hilfe von Simulationen werden die verschiedenen Stromrichterkonzepte verglichen sowie deren Vor- und Nachteile analysiert. Die gewonnenen Resultate werden verwendet, um Optimierungsmöglichkeiten zu finden, mit denen den mit dem Einsatzzweck gegebenen Randbedingungen Rechnung getragen werden kann. Es werden moderne SiC MOSFETs hinsichtlich der Eignung für den Einsatz in weich schaltenden DC/DC Konvertern untersucht. Anhand von experimentellen Untersuchungen wird erläutert, inwiefern durch den Einsatz dieser Bauteile eine Verbesserung der Werte kritischer Parameter wie der Effizienz und des Gewichts bei gleichzeitig hoher Dynamik des Ausgangsstroms erzielt werden kann. Zudem wird ein experimenteller Vergleich der Schaltverluste von SiC MOSFETs und herkömmlichen Si-Bauelementen angestellt. Eine neuartige Konvertertopologie wird vorgestellt, die Eigenschaften des Vollbrückengegentaktwandlers und des Halbbrückengegentaktwandlers miteinander vereint. Es wird gezeigt, dass diese Schaltung vorteilhaft in hocheffizienten Diodenlaseranwendungen eingesetzt werden kann. Eine experimentelle Verifikation der Topologie und ein Vergleich mit anderen Konzepten wird durchgeführt. Due to the more dynamic processes used in laser-material machining done with diode-lasers, there is a growing demand on highly dynamic current sources, with which the laser emitters can be driven. Thereby, manifold boundary conditions influence the basic system-design of the current-controlled power-electronic systems. The industrial field of application is characterized. Different commonly used topologies of the actual state of the art are analyzed in terms of usability in this field. With the aid of simulations, the different converter concepts are compared and analyzed regarding the advantages and disadvantages. The results are used to find possible ways of optimization, which take the boundary conditions defined by the field of application into account. Modern SiC MOSFETs are tested for use in soft switching DC/DC-Converters. Based on experiments, the possible enhancements of the values of critical parameters, e.g. efficiency or the weight, within systems of highly dynamic output current are discussed. An experimental comparison of the switching losses of SiC MOSFETs and conventional Si devices is done. A new converter topology is presented, which combines advantages of the Full-Bridge Converter and the Half Bridge-Converter. The usability in highly efficient diode laser systems is shown, an experimental verification is done and a comparison with conventional concepts is depicted.
