ndustrial laser systems for material processing applications rely on the availability of highly efficient, high-brightness diode lasers. GaAs-based broad-area laser bars play a vital role in such applications as pump sources for high-beam-quality solid-state lasers and, increasingly, as direct processing tools. This work studies 940 nm-laser bars emitting 1 kW optical power at room temperature, identifying those physical mechanisms that are currently limiting electrical-to-optical conversion efficiency as well as lateral beam quality. In the process, several diagnostic studies on bars with varied lateral-longitudinal design were carried out. The effects of technological measures for performance optimization were analyzed, yielding a new benchmark in efficiency and lateral divergence. The studies into altered resonator lengths of 4 and 6 mm as well as fill factors between 69 and 87 % successfully reduce both the voltage dropping across the device and power saturation at high currents, enabling 66 % efficiency at the operation point. Concrete measures how to reach efficiencies ≥70 % are presented thereafter, showing that doubling the efficiency value of the first 1 kW-demonstration in 2007 – amounting to 35 % – is in near reach. Investigation of the beam quality bases on a herein proposed and realized concept, in which the far field is resolved for each individual bar emitter. In this way, it is possible to determine how far-field profiles vary along the bar width and how much these variations affect the overall bar far-field. Further, such effects specific to bar structures can be separated into non-thermal and thermal influences. The effect of mechanical chip deformation (bar smile) as well as neighboring-emitter interaction has been investigated for the first time in active kW-class devices, yielding a lateral divergence as low as 8.8° at the operation point.

Durch die Steigerung der Dynamik von Laser-Materialbearbeitungsprozessen mittels Diodenlasern wächst der Bedarf an hochdynamischen Stromquellen, mit denen die Emitter betrieben werden können. Dabei nehmen mannigfaltige Randbedingungen Einfluss auf den grundlegenden Systemaufbau der stromgeregelten leistungselektronischen Systeme. Es wird das industrielle Einsatzgebiet der Stromquellen beschrieben. Verschiedene gebräuchliche Konvertertopologien des gegenwärtigen Standes der Technik werden hinsichtlich der Eignung für den Einsatz in diesem Umfeld untersucht. Mit Hilfe von Simulationen werden die verschiedenen Stromrichterkonzepte verglichen sowie deren Vor- und Nachteile analysiert. Die gewonnenen Resultate werden verwendet, um Optimierungsmöglichkeiten zu finden, mit denen den mit dem Einsatzzweck gegebenen Randbedingungen Rechnung getragen werden kann. Es werden moderne SiC MOSFETs hinsichtlich der Eignung für den Einsatz in weich schaltenden DC/DC Konvertern untersucht. Anhand von experimentellen Untersuchungen wird erläutert, inwiefern durch den Einsatz dieser Bauteile eine Verbesserung der Werte kritischer Parameter wie der Effizienz und des Gewichts bei gleichzeitig hoher Dynamik des Ausgangsstroms erzielt werden kann. Zudem wird ein experimenteller Vergleich der Schaltverluste von SiC MOSFETs und herkömmlichen Si-Bauelementen angestellt. Eine neuartige Konvertertopologie wird vorgestellt, die Eigenschaften des Vollbrückengegentaktwandlers und des Halbbrückengegentaktwandlers miteinander vereint. Es wird gezeigt, dass diese Schaltung vorteilhaft in hocheffizienten Diodenlaseranwendungen eingesetzt werden kann. Eine experimentelle Verifikation der Topologie und ein Vergleich mit anderen Konzepten wird durchgeführt. Thereby, manifold boundary conditions influence the basic system-design of the current-controlled power-electronic systems. The industrial field of application is characterized. Different commonly used topologies of the actual state of the art are analyzed in terms of usability in this field. With the aid of simulations, the different converter concepts are compared and analyzed regarding the advantages and disadvantages. The results are used to find possible ways of optimization, which take the boundary conditions defined by the field of application into account. Modern SiC MOSFETs are tested for use in soft switching DC/DC-Converters. Based on experiments, the possible enhancements of the values of critical parameters, e.g. efficiency or the weight, within systems of highly dynamic output current are discussed. An experimental comparison of the switching losses of SiC MOSFETs and conventional Si devices is done. A new converter topology is presented, which combines advantages of the Full-Bridge Converter and the Half Bridge-Converter. The usability in highly efficient diode laser systems is shown, an experimental verification is done and a comparison with conventional concepts is depicted.

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are already used in traffic signals, signage lighting, and automotive applications. However, its ultimate goal is to replace traditional illumination through LED lamps since LED lighting significantly reduces energy consumption and cuts down on carbon-dioxide emission. Despite dramatic advances in LED technologies (e.g., growth, doping and processing technologies), however, there remain critical issues for further improvements yet to be achieved for the realization of solid-state lighting.
