Why Wellness Sells written by Colleen Derkatch and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-13 with Medical categories.

How and why the idea of wellness holds such rhetorical—and harmful—power. In Why Wellness Sells, Colleen Derkatch examines why the concept of wellness holds such rhetorical power in contemporary culture. Public interest in wellness is driven by two opposing philosophies of health that cycle into and amplify each other: restoration, where people use natural health products to restore themselves to prior states of wellness; and enhancement, where people strive for maximum wellness by optimizing their body's systems and functions. Why Wellness Sells tracks the tension between these two ideas of wellness across a variety of sources, including interviews, popular and social media, advertising, and online activism. Derkatch examines how wellness manifests across multiple domains, where being "well" means different things, ranging from a state of pre-illness to an empowered act of good consumer-citizenship, from physical or moral purification to sustenance and care, and from harm reduction to optimization. Along the way, Derkatch demonstrates that the idea of wellness may promise access to the good life, but it serves primarily as a strategy for coping with a devastating and overwhelming present. Drawing on scholarship in the rhetoric of health and medicine, the health and medical humanities, and related fields, Derkatch offers a nuanced account of how language, belief, behavior, experience, and persuasion collide to produce and promote wellness, one of the most compelling—and harmful—concepts that govern contemporary Western life. She explains that wellness has become so pervasive in the United States and Canada because it is an ever-moving, and thus unachievable, goal. The concept of wellness entrenches an individualist model of health as a personal responsibility, when collectivist approaches would more readily serve the health and well-being of whole populations.

Rewire Your Brain written by KR Goswami and has been published by Kantigiri this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Antiques & Collectibles categories.

The brain is a most complex organ. We humans are blessed with evolved brain structure unlike other animals. A single brain contains more than 100 billion nerve cells, and information travels at a speed more than 250 miles per hour. Neurons have more connections than stars in the universe. The brain has only 2% of the body weight but consumes 20% to 30% of calories of our body. An incredible muscle that is only 2% in our body, but we almost know only 2% about the mystery of this muscle called brain. I had my masters in psychology almost 36 years ago. I have had ideas since then to write about the brain and share the facts with people especially after the tragedy of my younger brother, who served in the Indian Army. He was jeopardized to several hospitals after a brain injury while performing his duties at Jammu & Kashmir. I had active service in Indian Air Force, and therefore I could meet doctors in military hospitals. Most of the doctors opined that he might not survive for a couple of years, but some of the psychological techniques and brain disorder studies which I derived from my second year of psychology, he survived for next 13 years after medical board discharge from active service. I have gathered vital information from eminent writers, speakers, leaders, and experts on the subject. and tried to accumulate it in 21 different chapters; however, the information contained in the book may not be exhaustive in nature, but if you digest the information and apply some of the facts, principles, and ideas depicted, the whole trajectory of your life may be changed for a better life. I will be highly obliged if you write me about sure suggestions, if any, through email or my websites, which are given at the end of this book to improve my writings further.

WINNER OF THE 2016 AUSTRALIAN BOOK INDUSTRY AWARDS, INTERNATIONAL BOOK OF THE YEAR SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2016 BRITISH BOOK INDUSTRY AWARDS, NON-FICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR LONGLISTED FOR THE 2015 GOODREADS CHOICE AWARDS 'BEST SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY BOOK' A Sunday Times bestseller The key to living a happier, healthier life is inside us. Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain or our heart, yet we know very little about how it works. In Gut, Giulia Enders shows that rather than the utilitarian and — let’s be honest — somewhat embarrassing body part we imagine it to be, it is one of the most complex, important, and even miraculous parts of our anatomy. And scientists are only just discovering quite how much it has to offer; new research shows that gut bacteria can play a role in everything from obesity and allergies to Alzheimer’s. Beginning with the personal experience of illness that inspired her research, and going on to explain everything from the basics of nutrient absorption to the latest science linking bowel bacteria with depression, Enders has written an entertaining, informative health handbook. Gut definitely shows that we can all benefit from getting to know the wondrous world of our inner workings. In this charming book, young scientist Giulia Enders takes us on a fascinating tour of our insides. Her message is simple — if we treat our gut well, it will treat us well in return. But how do we do that? And why do we need to? Find out in this surprising, and surprisingly funny, exploration of the least understood of our organs.
