The present study was designed to examine players' biomechanical parameters, such as the extension of arms (the distance from the racket's handle to center of mass), displacement of center of mass, and right knee angle. The purpose of this study was to find out how these biomechanical parameters would related to or affect performance, through the analysis of collected data. In this study, selected subjects were divided into two groups based on their represented skill levels: group A (level 5.5) and B (level 4). Each subject had played 20 strokes with their double-handed backhand. Data was collected from all subjects to measure their arms extension, displacement of center of mass and inflection of the right knee angle. Significant difference was found between group A and B on average arms extension at the contacting moment (group A=9.29 inches, group B=8.18 inches, p-0.047). However, obtained data did not show significant correlation between most individuals' arms extension and performance. These two findings indicate that, even breaking their habitual comfortable arms, extension may not result in an obvious improvement in the beginning. Yet for players who desire to improve their backhand onto the next level, coaches have to constantly remind them to extend more of their arms when they swing. There was a significant correlation found on one participant's displacement of center of mass and ball speed, as the center of mass increases, ball speed decreased. The remaining participants showed no relationship between their ball speed and displacement of center of mass. Also, higher skilled group A did not show statistically greater displacement of center of mass than lower skilled group B. There was significant correlation found on one participant's right knee angle and ball speed. When lower extremities were bent less, ball speed increased. The rest of the participants showed no relationship between ball speed and inflection of lower extremities. Therefore, all participants from group A to B did not show a utilization of their center of mass or bending more of their lower extremities in order to increase their ball speed. In conclusion, for skill level 4 and 5.5 players, arms extension will help them to improve their double-handed backhand. Instead of increasing the center of mass to speed up the racquet, keeping the center of mass stable along the stroke is the best way to perform a double-handed backhand stroke. For non-beginners, as well as the participants in this experiment, coaches do not have to constantly remind them to focus their inflection of lower extremities, and should give respect to trainees' personal style; unless they have technical mistakes. For future research, more work can be done on beginners, in order to find out if these three biomechanical parameters would related to or affect beginners' performance.

The problem of this study was to biomechanically analyze the data of the performance of the one-handed backhand groundstroke for female beginning and advanced tennis players using the flexed (circular backswing) or the extended (straight backswing) elbow. The Ss selected for this study were 6 members of the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse Tennis Team and 6 beginning players with a year or less of tennis experience. These Ss were filmed at a rate of 100 fps while executing the one-handed backhand groundstroke. The following data were described after analysis of the film: flexion of the elbow joint at the completion of the backswing and start of the forward swing through the contact point; displacement of the center of gravity of the right hand, right lower arm, right upper arm, racket and total body; actual and cumulative time from the completion of the backswing through the contact point; linear velocities of the racket, right hand, right lower arm and right upper arm; and the contact point in relation to the body. Ten tracings were made of each subject at the completion of the backswing through the contact point. The author concluded that individuals execute the backhand with a difference in style and the effectiveness of this stroke was influenced by anticipation, wrist strength, power, and flexibility.
