Portland, Oregon's innovative and distinctive landmark, Tilikum Crossing Bridge of the People, is the first major bridge in the U.S, carrying trains, busses, streetcars, bicycles, and pedestrians- but no private automobiles. When regional transportation agency TriMet began planning for the first bridge to be constructed across the Willamette River since 1973, the goal was to build a something symbolic, which would represent the progressive nature of the Twenty-First Century. In this book, MacDonald captures the story of an engaging public process that involved neighborhood associations, small businesses, environmentalists, biologists, bicycling enthusiasts, designers, engineers, and Portland City Council. The result &– an entirely unique bridge that increased the transportation capacity of the city while enabling Portlanders to experience their urban home in an entirely new way--car-free. Written in a friendly voice, readers will learn how Portland came to be known as "The City of Bridges" and the home to this new icon in the city's landscape. MacDonald uses 98 of his own drawings to illustrate the history of Portland river crossings. Readers will take away a deeper understanding of how our public structures come to reflect a community.

This book is about the daily life of a group of homeless people who live in camps under some freeway bridges in downtown Los Angeles. It is what is called a narrative ethnography, that is, it consists primarily of what the author said to them and what they said to him. As a research project in the Department of Psychiatry at UCLA, Underwood documented conversations with these homeless people for two and one half years. The ethnography unfolds in chronological order to allow the reader to learn about the Bridge People the way the author didóone day at a time. Underwood witnessed the sights, sounds, and smells of this particular form of extreme poverty and developed his research into a discussion of how these people view their existence and the world around them. The author also relates his experience with democratic and humanistic ideals of today.

“A treasure...a wise and entertaining book that should appeal to the spiritual pilgrim in all of us, no matter what the faith and no matter whether believer or nonbeliever.” – Chicago Tribune The New York Times bestselling author of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything and Jesus: A Pilgrimage turns his attention to the relationship between LGBT Catholics and the Church in this loving, inclusive, and revolutionary book. A powerful call for tolerance, acceptance, and support—and a reminder of Jesus' message for us to love one another. In this moving and inspiring book, Martin offers a powerful, loving, and much-needed voice in a time marked by anger, prejudice, and divisiveness. On the day after the Orlando nightclub shooting, James Martin S.J. posted a video on Facebook in which he called for solidarity with our LGBT brothers and sisters. "The largest mass shooting in US history took place at a gay club and the LGBT community has been profoundly affected," he began. He then implored his fellow Catholics—and people everywhere—to "stand not only with the people of Orlando but also with their LGBT brothers and sisters." Father Martin's post went viral and was viewed more than 1.6 million times. Adapted from an address he gave to New Ways Ministry, a group that ministers to and advocates for LGBT Catholics, Building a Bridge provides a roadmap for repairing and strengthening the bonds that unite all of us as God's children. Martin uses the image of a two-way bridge to enable LGBT Catholics and the Church to come together in a call to end the "us" versus "them" mentality. Turning to the Catechism, he draws on the three criteria at the heart of the Christian ministry—"respect, compassion, and sensitivity"—as a model for how the Catholic Church should relate to the LGBT community. WINNER OF THE LIVING NOW BOOK AWARD IN SOCIAL ACTIVISM/CHARITY.

Bridges are not structures, but people-people who have been changed on the inside through the joyful and difficult work of building relationships in a second or third culture. These people carry within them an ability to identify compassionately with others. These Bridge Leaders have the ability to move back and forth between groups, and so can stand with multiple language groups, religious groups, political parties, and even countries. Because of who they have become, Bridges can bring us together.Bridges are shaped and inspired by the prayer that Jesus prayed to God the Father: As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world...I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. (John 17:21-23) People become Bridges, and Bridges can bring us together.
